D'oh!

Just seen that you can get the 335i in the UK NOW for £33k...... 300hp too. So in a year you caould easily get one with 12k miles for £27k I should think....

Sorry to say that I would take the BMW over the S3.....crikey!

Audi havent aimed this S3 at the UK market I cant help but think........

I really like that, and i could be tempted, but i don't think it's quick enough frown.gif

What a hatch that's 0.1secs behind the current S4? What were you expecting the figures to be?

That's actually a fraction quicker than I thought it would be. It's almost a second quicker than the old one.

[/ QUOTE ]

And only a second slower than an RS4. Not to shabby at all.

[/ QUOTE ]

Fractions of seconds count for so much at this level. Personally i like cars to be under 5 seconds to 60. 5.7 seconds is too sedate for a car with sporting intent.

That's fine but no one ever expected a sporty hatchback to be in that league for sub £30k did they? It's a hothatch we're talking about not a sports car. crazy.gif

265bhp is just not enough in this game anymore.

If your playing the "numbers down the pub" game then may be not but this car is lighter giving it a good 0-60 in my opinion.

I think it's placed well for a lux/exec sporty car. Don't forget they need to leave space for the RS (if it comes) plus they won't want to impact sales of the bigger cars.

I think Evo's last point in that test was a telling one. The 335i is so good, the forthcoming M3 is going to have to be brilliant. Or words to that effect.

I've never really thought of an E90 3 series, but I saw a gorgeous one outside the office yesterday in (Le Mans?) blue. Really looked the part. And this 335i definitely has the ooomph to make it interesting. 169144-ok.gif

(Just looking at the BMW website - you can get a 335d now! That's gonna be mental! EEK2.GIF )

Back to the S3, it always fell between the cracks for me. When I wanted a hot hatch equivalent I wanted maximum bang for my bucks, which is what the Impreza gave me. I wasn't too bothered that the S3 had a far, far superior interior, because it was slower and therefore didn't feature in my thoughts. For me, the S3 was trying to be too grown up in a youthful market.

However, I fully understand those like Mollox who love theirs to bits. For those who like it, the S3 really seems to be a keeper. The thing with the Impreza was every 12 months you were always hankering after the next model year version with a few new tweaks and a slightly nicer interior...

Too little, Too late!

Simple as that, I would rather it were £32k and have 350bhp, DSG and slightly lighter with a 0-60mph nearer 5 seconds. As others have said, you can now get a new 335i which people are saying is doing 0-60mph in 5.4 seconds for only a couple of grand more.

I reckon they will be bringing out an RS3, they can't leave that as their flagship.

I wish these companies would realise that not every one wants a big motor for throwing around, it won't eat into sales of the RS4 if the figures are similar, they are for 2 different markets.

True enough, but Audi always seem to be playing catch up. This isn't by any stretch of the imagination a 'ground breaking' car. Yes, it will be fast, comfortable, immaculatly made and have a certain prestigue. I am sure it's owners will love it, but it's not extreme enough for me.

Of course, people will say get the RS3.. but it's been denied for years, and i can't see it being made myself.

So are the arches all standard then or are they flaired a touch. Can't really tell. crazy.gif

I have to say the car being in the 5s 0-60 will be way more than most of the hot hatchs in this segment and thats really what we should be comparing it to. Audi aren't going for the numbers as Scotty has said already but what they are trying to do is go for lighter more nimble more rewarding cars not just stick a big lump in the front end thats quick but it handles like a boat. They have been doing that for years, this is a great way forward, its far quicker than the current S3 and could still leave space for an RS3 ... time will tell. 169144-ok.gif

Your right, but like it or not 0-60 is the most common marker. I'd prefer it if they used the TED type times that performance car tried to push years ago.

But as I say they are going for the improvement in feel, lighter weight components not for the headline figures. But boys will be boys, I think the beauty of the S3 might be in the driving. Lets hope so anyway because visually at least its not going be snapping knicker elastic anytime soon. grin.gif

WTF is it with this obsession with 0-60 times? I just don't get it. Two cars might have the same 0-60 but the mid-range of one can be a shed load better than the other because it's got more torque or less weight

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree with you on that. I am never bothered about 0-60, as I rarely (well, never) put the effort in for it. Overtaking and motorway manoeuvres on the otherhand where you need a bit of shove are way more important.

Unfortunatly 0-> 60 times is the only real marker we have to go on.

I hope the weight thing really comes to life, and makes this car a really good drive. I have no wish for it to be poor, absolutly the oppersite. Deffo going to have to get a drive in one.
