martin275
[ QUOTE ] Hmmm. I'd by an A4 over a passat any day. They are nicer, better made, classier finish, nicer lines/styling etc. Yes they share the same engine, but the Passat in our carpark vs mine (same engine) and the A4 wins again. It's quieter. Sure, that's probably just more padding to dull the noise, but it is. No doubt you'll disagree and all BMW owners will start having a field day..... I wish people on TSN would drop the badge thing. It's doing my fecking head in. Have you thought that some on here buy their cars based on WHAT THEY LIKE?! [/ QUOTE ] Then you must like throwing money away or just like being ripped off!! I completely agree that you should buy what you like, but I still believe that the badge is a key factor when buying an A4 over a Passat or an A3 over a Golf. I’ll respond if I may…..(I understand that you just gave your opinion btw, I’m just giving mine!) Better made – How do you define that? It’s not something I noticed when I looked at them both together. Classier Finnish – The A4 has been around for a while and is getting a bit long in the tooth. I think the Passat is classier looking, particularly inside. Nicer lines / Styling – I do like the S Line, but that is a lot more expensive, the standard 2.0TDI SE looks very basic in comparison to the S-Line and to my Passat Sport. You’ve mentioned quieter, I agree and have a few more to add. More modern design, better ride, better handling, more spacious inside (massively so), bigger boot, better equipped (a lot), better seats, much better value etc. I won’t go on as you've nodded off already

It's got feck all to do with the badge. To me, it's just better. Plain and simple. Yes the A4 has been out, what, 7 years now? But the face-lift B7 shape looks fresher, and I think the new Passat looks nice, apart from the rear - I do like both cars. But the A4 is still better to me - in every manner. The only thing the Passat wins on is value, for me. None of this is to say I wouldn't own one. I would. I like them. But while I like the A4 more, that's the choice for me. martin275
Fair enough! I still can't see where the A4 is better though...... (Obviously space, ride, handling and refinement aren't at the top of your list)
Sparky
Comparing the new passat and new A4 (B7), I don't think the passat wins on handling. Can't say about space, but then if I wanted something bigger, I'd get an A6. As for refinement, you're having a fecking giraffe.
martin275
Yes, but the A6 is even more expensive. I should probably leave this, but have you actually driven the new Passat? I’ve driven a couple of B7 A4’s and both an SE and Sport Passat. The Passat Sport handles better than an A4 SE and it is also more refined. When I say refined, I mean that it rides better and is quieter. I think we’ll have to agree to disagree. I remember having a similar debate with you about the Leon interior so I know that I’m wasting my time.
Sparky
Stop being a ****, Martin. I was teasing you with the Leon comments, as well you know. Yes, I've driven a new Passat. I'd not make comments otherwise. Of course we disagree. That's what opinions are. I don't think any worse of you for preferring the Passat. martin275
The only cock was the cockup I made when posting, I thought I’d added a smiley face to the end of my last sentence... I remember the Leon discussion well, I enjoyed it. I like a good ‘debate’ as you know and particularly enjoy donning my defensive cape. Mind you, you need to be like that when you have a 1 series. I still think we should leave it and agree we have different priorities though. Even more off topic, what happened to Dr Bling?

Milo
I've skimmed some of this thread as 1 or 2 of the posts have been made by individuals trolling and trying to be 'controversial'. It doesn't make for interesting reading. Can you get a 2.0T 4WD Passat? Personally I'm not too keen on the look of the Passat and prefer the A4. Plus it's too big for me. The A4 is big enough thanks. The fuel economy is bad enough without going bigger/heavier. So I guess I'll stick to my outdated lump of overpriced German tat if I want to keep impressing the neighbours. Golfer
[ QUOTE ] What's the fun in that? Edited to add: The fun in dropping the badge thing. It's one of TSN's favourite arguments. jimdiesel
Regarding the A4 Passat debate, I feel I am qualified to comment. I have owned a B6 A4 and S4, and a C6 A6. My wife currently has a Passat 2.0TDi Sport. Im my opinion, the Passat is a much better product than the A4. It has less road and wind noise, and slightly more engine noise (understandable being a transverse engined car). The ride handling of the Passat is vastly superiour to the A4 and comparable to the C6 A6. The Passat is as good a package as the 320d M Sport I spent 2 weeks with last month, only loosing out slightly on engine refinement, and interior materials. Just my opinion.
Milo
It'sa bit unfair comparing the B6 A4 ride and handling to new Passat; it is acknowledged the B7 A4 has significant improvements over the B6 regards these. Having had both, I know this first hand. I have been in a new Passat (albeit as a passenger) on a east to west coast run along the twisties rather than the A69 or A66 routes. I wouldn't consider the ride or handling to be any better than my A4. In my opinion
