NewNiceMrMe
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Without wishing to offend anyone... Lets be honest, a Passat is about THE most boring car in the world. Jim had a purpose for his and it serves it admirably from what I hear, but they're not exactly a choice that have your blood pumping. I hate my A4 Avant, but I'd choose it over a new Passat again. Apart from anything, it looks nicer IMO. That said, I'd not have either. I'd have an E46/E90 Tourer 320d before both. [/ QUOTE ] Well, I, Martin275, only ever seem to rate a car that I or a member of my family owns or drives . What utter crap. [/ QUOTE ] Don't be so hard on yourself Martin. NewNiceMrMe
[ QUOTE ] Oh and the 320D SE Tourer might be a more exciting car to drive, but it's very dull to look at unless you spend thousands on the M Sport kit it, the SE is at least £5k more expensive (plus extras to match the spec) and it doesn't have the space. So that's not really a fair comparison. [/ QUOTE ] Well we'll just have to disagree on that because I maintain that whilst I think the interior of Passat is very nice, that it is THE most boring looking car on the roads today. It defines the word bland.
NewNiceMrMe
[ QUOTE ] I do enjoy a good debate, providing it doesn't get too personal or insulting of course (which ours haven't) [/ QUOTE ] Oh the irony of it Martin! You'd do well to practice what you preach on the back of "utter crap" as I believe you said earlier at the end of a statement questioning car knowledge? Kettle. Black....you know the rest. [/ QUOTE ] Well, you must have a very poor knowledge of cars if you actually think that’s true. What utter crup. Have you actually spent any time with one? “apart from anything else, it looks nicer imo” That seals it then, the A4 must be better! Whilst I agree that it’s not the most exciting car you can drive, that’s why I bought the 130, now I’ve got pretty much all bases covered (for my budget). However, when it comes to excitement, it isn’t any worse than something like the A4 or any of the other cars in that price bracket. I do agree that it serves a purpose and as a family car it is superb. For pounding up and down the motorways and spending hours behind the wheel in comfort, it’s just about perfect. Imo.... The whole VW range excluding the GTI and R32 golf are utterly dull and boring. We've had a VW for comming up to four years and we wont be going back anytime soon. The customer care is appaling plus the build quality just isint up to its rivals. The 320d M sport is 3k more than the SE model which is hardly thousands. all imo
garcon magnifique
Since when did knowledge of cars have anything to do with whether you prefer the looks of one model over another? I do quite like the latest Passat. It does look a little more interesting than the A4 to my eyes. And I do especially like the lines of the Passat estate. And the little I've seen of the inside of one leads me to think it's roughly where it ought to be - a bit plusher than an Octavia, but not as classy as an A4. In SE trim the 3 series looks a bit dull, but not as dull as an A4 SE. And again, if anything, the 3 series Touring is a better looker than the saloon. It's a relative thing at best, but if we're really talking about the best looker in the midsized repmobile saloon stakes, I actually prefer the Accord and Mondeo to any of the Germans. And the new Lexus IS for that matter. (But of course - just to maintain some consistency here - the Subaru Legacy is clearly the best of the lot.... )
ian_m
How is this a debate It jusy seems to be going round and round in circles! Martin and Jim like the Passat more than the B7, others dont!! Well I for one will sleep better tonight knowing that this important Issue has been cleared up! I am sure the U.N will be pleased too, they can call off the emergency summit

garcon magnifique
And improved again for 2007. It's almost like the Legacy is a different marque to the Impreza/Forester. (It's clear they're aiming at a different - so far largely oblivious - market). I often get a new Forester as a courtesy car - it's great fun, but the interior makes me think I've gone back twenty years...

steve2
I know what car Ian is getting . John Barker of EVO has confirmed it It's the ctr 911 because on page 127 of this month's EVO he says "Thats not to say the CTR isn't fun.Far from it. The moment I wriggled in over the rising diagonal of the internal roll-cage,eased myself into the shiny leather recaro bucket seat and surveyed the incredible compact, period surroundings, I WAS SMITTEN" Or has our Ian been doing a lot of test driving for Rufs? martin275
I wasn't going to post anything else, because as smitten says, this isn't going anywhere. I’d just like to try and clear a couple of things up. When I said MrMe must lack car knowledge, I really should have said that he must drive around with his eyes closed, because he must do if he thinks the Passat is THE most boring car on the road. It doesn’t matter whether you like it or not, I reckon most people could think of at least one car that is worse. I also don’t see how pointing out that a comment is ‘utter crap’ is getting personal. As that’s the case, I’m not going to take your comment about me only rating cars I own as a personal insult. It’s not true btw, there are loads of cars I like and would like to own, but I’m bound to have a stronger opinion about cars that I know well. I would never rubbish a car that I haven’t driven, apart from its styling or static qualities. I don’t see anything wrong with having an opinion on two cars that I have spent some time with and seriously considered owning. e.g. If I was spouting off about a 6 series (just an example), then I would deserve and expect to get shot down, because I’ve only even sat in one. Of course I have an opinion on the styling and interior (I particularly love the coupe), but as I haven’t driven one, I can only go off what I’ve read, which isn’t enough. I’m not expecting to change your mind, but if you really think this is the most boring looking car on the road, then I really do give up. Sparky
The Passat is far from the most boring car on the road. That's got to be reserved for the Mondeo or Vectra or 3 series.
garcon magnifique
[ QUOTE ] Garcon, if the Subaru is the best..... ....why are you buying a BMW? [/ QUOTE ] Gone off it now. Too many 3 series on the road, too many numpties who don't know what the Alpina badge means, not enough toys, and diesel's 5 pence dearer than unleaded now, which kinda negates the economy! Nah - unless something else blows me away, I think I'll have to admit I am a huge badge loyalist and get another Legacy. I wish I could justify the Litchfield Impreza, if only cos it'd be the quickest car on TSN (FACT! ), but I can't.
