Hudster
it's not vag.com, it's vag-com... an interface to link your PC to your car for fault diagnosis the interface is supplied by these guys, have a look: www.ross-tech.com
wyliss
very interesting hudster. for your average joe bloggs would it be worth purchasing if you were not got to do any mods to the vehicle?
Paul
Its a very powerful diagnostic tool. I use mine more on other peoples cars "because ive got it" than my own and the other 2 VAG cars in my household. Its quite an investment for a genunine lead for the occasional use. Most of the time mine sits in the laptop case in the cupboard.
Hudster
it's one of those things that you'll hardly ever use, but it's the ultimate tool when you have a problem. I've got a third party (cheap) lead, but it will only do some very limited operations. If you've got a few mates/family with audi/vws/skodas/seats, get an official lead and it'll be worth every penny
Paul
Ive got the latest official lead. Hex USB + Can and current copy of software. Your looking at £185 + shipping from US, plus any import/vat charges, so quite easily £200+ for a genuine lead like mine, thats future proof, with CAN for later cars. add that to the cost of a laptop if you havent got one, ad it soon adds up. PetrolDave
I got a genuine HEX-COM+CAN lead which I use on my Audi and my wife's Skoda - and I've already helped out nearly a dozen people locally (all of whom were quite happy to make a "donation" since it normally saves them an expensive trip to a stealer). I use the Dell Inspiron 510m laptop I bought to use with the lead around the house and garden on our WiFi network, so I can't really say that has been for VAG-COM use only. Sponge
I inherited an old IBM Thinkpad which I planned to use with the lead, but it stopped working. So I was left with a £200+ lead and nothing to use it on. I had no choice but to go out and buy a new laptop. Of course, I then had to go out and buy a wireless access bridge so I could connect to my home network. All in all it cost me quite a bit of money. My lead now spends most of it's time in my laptop case. However, I have to admit I now use my laptop more than my desktop PC. Vegged out on the sofa in the living room is a lot more comfortable/sociable than being sat in the office on my own. One more thing - I'd recommend buying it from a UK retailer. I bought mine from the US and customs charges were quite heavy. You have to assume you will get stung and work it into your calculations. In the end it cost the same as buying it in the UK would have. Email/website support is very good, however any fault with the hardware will be easier to sort with a UK retailer than with a US one. It used to be the case where you were unlucky to get caught by HMC charges, but now it's the norm and you're very lucky if you don't.
