SMB
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Chris, the GTI oil pump issue you mention was that the very first cars had not had the bolts done up properly, and they could come loose, it's a not a generic fault, more a human error in manufacturing. [/ QUOTE ] ....Which tends to support the advice that Snoopy Geoff gives that it's best not to buy a car in its first year of production. [No sign of Geoff on TSN recently ] [/ QUOTE ] Red, I would agree, but the engine was in use in the A3 first, it was just a human error in a particular batch
TwoSheds
I read somewhere, as I made a note of it a while back, that there was a 'coating' error of a fixing bolt of the oil pump chain wheel which could result in potential loss of the oiling system. GTI chassis no ranges 1KZ5W152566 to 1KZ5W162839 & 1KZ5PO50267 to 1KZ5PO57002.

ChrisBuer
Whoo hoo! The car has finally been fixed!! Got a call today to say that it was ready for collection and they also gave me a run down of the faults found. Firstly as advised before, my oil pump had failed which had caused the top of my engine to run dry. This in turn causes the cams to grind into the cylinder-head causing the majority of the damage. They also advised that my gearbox was pretty b*ggered as well. Apparently inside the engine casing, the flywheel had started to catch on the gearbox which had caused considerable damage. The entire unit has been replaced as a result. The VW chap said he'd never seen this problem before any was confident that it was an isolated issue, but it does make you wonder! The car had only done 4400 miles!! Anyway, just looking forward to getting her back now in tip top condition! Fingers crossed
rs32
great news Chris - and also very encouraging that they've traced the issue through to adjoining parts. now you have to run her in again worth checking the date stamp on the left side of the new engine - it should have a sticker with "datum" XX/YY/ZZ towards the top of the block next to the washer filler cap. this must have cost them a fortune to repair let us know how collection goes mate - and then off to APS you go
jimmyp
Good stuff Chris why don't you run her in by driving to the Brighton meet tomorrow... Glad the beast is fixed

ChrisBuer
Cheers guys! I would drive it to the Brighton meet (ideal cos the misses is away this weekend) but a friend of my called Ed is going to collect it for me. Hopefully I'll collect her next week, maybe Wednesday Then I'll have to run her in properly to fully unleash the 300bhp….whoops did I say 300bhp?!? I meant 247bhp *ahem*

Just checked mine - and althought the engine was built a few months before it finally found its new home with me it is still way newer than the car Mine was virtually a Christmas baby

ChrisBuer
Well the sun is shining, the sky is blue and today I finally pick my car back up Whoo hooo!!!! The new engine and gearbox have been tested by APS for the last week and they say it is running VERY well So, rear valance colour-coded, new reg plates on plus a nice little short shifter The cams are stuck in customs at the moment so hopefully these will go on next week, but I cannot wait to get my car back. I lost her on the 29th Setember so it's been a while and using a Caterham this time of year is...well....chilly Damn, it's like getting a new car all over again....I hardly slept a wink last night haha!! Whooo hooo!!!!!!!!!

ChrisBuer
How is it? Well…………… Bl00dy fantastic is what it is haha!!!!!!!!!!!!! I tell you, there must have been something wrong with my car from day one, because this isn't the R32 that I've come to know. This is a beast!! At the moment I don't have the cams, shifter or remap on the car (as there has been a hold up in customs), but these should be on next week. I shudder to think how quick it will be then! Put it this way, this engine has about 700 miles on it now and the car feels a lot faster than my old engine with 4500 miles on it!! The main differences being the now proper surge in torque at around 80 to 100 monkies per hour My father had a Carrera 4S on test drive (25 miles on the clock) and I didn't have any problems keeping in touch between these speeds, so as you can imagine, I'm very impressed with it! Throttle response is also sharper, it just seems to pick up in any gear at any speed. I'm assured this engine is brand new, but it does not feel tight and breathless, it just flows. The plate on the engine states it's a June 06 build, so it's possible that it's been run a bit already, but unlikely. Perhaps it's just because my old engine was a real dog?!? Anyway, the new number plates I've had fitted on the car look excellent and the colour coded valance is spot on! Really looks good on the Gunmetal Grey!! I'll do a proper review and "reveal" of my car once the conversion is completed next week. I'll also post some pictures of her as she is looking really good now! I tell you something, when I first got this car I thought "yeah this is good, but it doesn't feel like a 3.2 litre engine". Then I read about how long these engines take to run in and thought "ah that's why it feels a bit slow". But the running in aside, this car is a beast and makes my old Cooper S Works (new shape) feel like a shopping trolley! Maybe VW have sprinkled some secret magic dust on it, because it is an absolute peach!!! I could go on about it all day, but I'll stop now Chris
rs32
sounds great ! what we've found with various tests is that in normal road situations the MkV with stage 1 + Milltek cat-back is almost identical to the MkIV with 6463, cats and Milltek cat-back. Hence your *cough* upgrade should really do the business when fitted - looking forward to seeing some 1/4 mile comparisons if we get the Bruntingthorpe test day sorted out. The cold air is also helping now - you can hear it taking a huge gulp of air, filling its lungs and then surging forward - 4th gear is especially strong in mine at the moment Will be at APS myself next week - but not to make it go quicker glad you're back up and running Chris - enjoy
ChrisBuer
I'm not up and running…..I'm up and flying!!! Seriously though, I'll calm myself now! What day next week are you at APS Rich? It would be good to finally meet up as I'd love to see your stereo install! Cheers!! Chris.

ChrisBuer
Well it's been a couple of days running my car now with the new engine and gearbox and I thought I'd give an update. I'm sure this time of year helps (with it being colder), but the torque is certainly feeling very strong indeed. A drive out last night around some very tight country lanes demonstrated this perfectly! Considering I'm still trying to keep it under 4500rpm, I'm using a variety of gears, even leaving it in 4th and 5th for some corners, the torque just pulls you out onto the straights with a lovely surge. One thing I have noticed is that the car feels quicker in it's mid-range pick up when you don't floor it, but instead use between 1/4 and 1/2 throttle. There is a surge that just builds and pushes you forwards…fantastic!! A friend of mine (who owns a Fiesta ST) said "it's just effortless isn't it…it doesn't even feel as if it's trying yet this would absolutely EAT my car alive". Also after driving for a few days, I've noticed that the throttle isn't as sharp as it was when I had the remap on. However, since I've not been flooring it and taking it easy, this isn't a big issue for the moment. I've also found that the car seems to have excellent levels of grip without making any tyre noise. I guess from having driven my 1.6 litre Golf courtesy car, I just became accustomed to low levels of grip and poor body control. You don't realise just how good the R32 is until you have to drive another car for an extended period. Well this is the last update that I'll post on this thread. It's been really frustrating not having the car, but equally, it's been a joy to deal with APS and Motorworld VW in Oxford who were both absolutely fantastic! The whole process was smoothly handled and painless (with the exception of not actually having the car haha). I'd certainly recommend Motorworld VW if you live near Oxford as they are very good indeed! Fingers crossed for next week when I'm hoping the car will go back to have it's final stages of the conversion done. If the car is anything to go by at the moment, it should absolutely fly! Who needs Red Bull eh! I'm itching to write my APS R300 review and hopefully it won't be long now Cheers, Chris.
Oli
Chris, My car has just been on the ramp, due to a small rattle devloping from the sump area. Once we had the car in the air with the lower engine guard removed, the noise is quite evident. Every 20 secs or so the rattle will get noticibly noisier. I have just spoke to VW and it is going in 1st thing monday morning for a listen. Does this sound like the noise you had? Oli
rs32
[ QUOTE ] My car has just been on the ramp, due to a small rattle devloping from the sump area [/ QUOTE ] Oli, this could be the heat shielding around the exhaust manifold/downpipes coming slightly loose. Also has your car been to VW for the "Pulley Tensioner" recall check - ask the dealer about this. Hopefully nothing too serious
Oli
Thanks Richard. It is definately from within the sump area or just behind it, I would have loved it to have been from the exhaust area!!
ChrisBuer
Hi Oli, Firstly, yes get your car checked for peace of mind, however this doesn't sound the same as my problem. The noise from my engine was coming from the top where the oil pump had failed to pump the oil to the top of the engine, thus causing my cams to grind into the cylinder head. It was quite apparent that this sound was coming from the top of the engine and not the sump. However like I say, do have it checked out just for peace of mind. Best of luck mate I'm sure it'll be fine
