R32 v BMW 335D

all diesels show a degree of torque that would make a petrol motor envious...

however they also run out of puff too quick when in gear.....resulting in gear changes when half way past during an overtake.....which is one of the reasons why they are all autos.....

the 335d is by no means a competitor to the r32 given the price difference.....

if bmw's are the future i would take a 5 series over the 3 series too

Most modern "performance" diesels (I'm talking over 200bhp here) have enough performance and torque to get past a couple of cars easily and then some before you need to bother about changing gear.

When I had mine remapped (210hp/475nm) one of the criteria was that it lost the characteristic you describe and now it pulls hard all the way to the redline unlike before when it used to go past its peak torque 2/3 into the avaliable revs.

I've had a ride in a new 330d (230bhp) and that pulls extremely well and on that basis alone the 335d must be an absolute bahnstomer of a car.

Hmmmm. no body likes being on the motorways, and getting 'thrashed' by the in gear performance of modern performance (so called) diesel oit burners... A friend of mine has a 535d and it is VERY rapid in its 'in gear' times, and handles quite well...

One thing tho... as already mentioned, these cars are in a different price (and some would argue 'quality') bracket to a £24k Golf... However...

I dont like to point out the OBVIOUS... but do you honestly think the drivers of such vehicles have a BIG grin, ear to ear, when they drop it a gear and lower the windows... screaming through tunnels especially..???

NO ONE HAS MENTIONED HOW THESE CARS SOUND... I for one love the sound my 'R' makes, and wouldn't swap it for the world for the rattle and totally non-discript sound an oil burner makes... no matter how fast they are...

I could ONLY upgrade to something that sounded EQUALLY as good or better...

As such it would have to be an M3, S4 or RS4... Otherwise i would have gone for the new S3...

Just pointing out the 'obvious' guys... jump.gif

I think it's a valid comparison because the 335d like the R32 is a to all intents and purposes a practical supercar which must be one of the reasons we're all driving them or we would all be in 2nd hand boxsters, no? Someone in the thread above uses the word stealth about the 335 which i wld also use for the r32... the means of propulsion are completely different but that makes comparing the end result or total package all the more fun...

Although I loved my R32 I had real problems with the optional Recaro motorsport seats which creaked and rattled all the time. I just could not learn to live with it and with a £1000 option didn't see why I should. After many trips to the dealer and many new seats being fitted they admitted defeat and a deal was reached whereby they have purchased the car back from me at a price we were both happy with. I was going to re-order another R32 with the standard seats but after playing in my Dads 535D I tried the 330D just to see what they are like and was so impressed couldn't help thinking what the 335D would be like. I took one out and was smitten. This is the reason for the move and and I must admit that if I had an R32 with the normal seats in the firts place I wouldn't even have thought of selling it. Great car its just that I now have the ideal chance to swap to an undoubtedly quicker car with more mpg to boot, so why not. beerchug.gif
