Hi there.

I have a E36 1995 320i (M50). A few weeks back I washed my car then took it down the road when all of the sudden the car cut out. I tried restarting it by taking out the fuel pump fuse. It started but was misfiring, the car was shaky and a blueish kind of smoke formed from the exhaust. I managed to get the car home but was pulling and stopping. I changed all the spark plugs but that made no difference. I then checked the coils to find out one of the coils in the first cylinder was burnt. It turned out to be there was no coil output on the first cylinder and this is what is causing the car to misfire. A BMW specialist told me my ECU had been burnt out and was quoting Over £500+vat for a new one! Another specialist told me to take the ECU out and try to air it out. When i took the ECU out it was damp and there was leaved surrounding it. Turned out the specialist did not have a good look. Does anyone know if it is worth buying a new one or is there anywhere i can buy a second hand one. Also can the ECU be repaired and do I have to change all the coils? Help will be greatly appriciated.

Thanks

Unbolt the casing and take out the main board of the DME to inspect the dried debri. If this is too much and is harnessing chips, etc, then the DME is unfortunately dead. If however there is only surface debri, purchase one of those E-board cleaner sprays and spray the board while you brush off the dried outs with an old toothbrush. Let it dry off, plug it and see if there is life!
