For somebody who has just passed their CBT grin.gif can you give some recommendations of which used 125cc 2-stroke bike would be best for commuting. The criteria would be a decent top end so that 60mph is not ''ragging it'' and reasonably comfy for a 20 mile round trip commute. I have been looking at bikes made by Cagiva and Derbi, any thoughts much appreciated.

I have decided instead of going straight to direct access following my CBT that i would get a decent 125cc and commute into work for a year before i then go for the full licence, thus giving me some ''road time'' and a more gentle break into riding.

Having owned 2 Aprilia RS125's i would avoid them like the plague for commuting, they are beautiful bikes and are very fast for what they are (~110mph, 0-60 in around 6 seconds) but aren't really cut out for just commuting.

Anything highly strung (i.e cagiva, aprilia etc isn't really ideal for commuting) they have no steering lock and are very heavy on maintenance and rebuilds and very very easy to seize if you are not careful.

I would look more towards a yamaha Dt125 if you set on having a 2-stroke, the supermoto version would make an ideal commuter they can take the nasty weather and have a good riding position for carving through traffic.

i think they might have meant a Varadero?

one of the apprentices at work has one & its massive for a 125, the engine looks like a v twin & i supect it is (there are some mini moto style choppers aound with an extra dummy cylinder so it might be worth checkling for sure wink.gif) BUT being massive, 4 stroke & heavy its the slowest bike i've ever ridden! very uninteresting Flush.gif

2 stroke are more fun & smell nicer but in my opinion once you start to get decent power out of a 2 stroke they just wear out too quickly to be considered reliable dependable transport!

you have to run them so rich & so oily to stop them siezing up when cruising on part throttle that you'll not really get the full "ring ding" screaming experience from them smashfreakB.gif

i know they're boring (& slow) but a 4 stroke single would probably be the most reliable commuter!

can't believe i said that as i love my 2 strokes suicide.gif
