Atomic
[ QUOTE ] Hmm, range full-to-empty at that speed would be under 160 miles [/ QUOTE ] To be honest I dont think that's so bad.
Muppet_man
You guys are way behind. If you want impressive here it is. 1983 Yugo 980cc, down hill with a 35 mph following wind......... ......... 32 MPH ! Now I bet you're all just embarrased about all of those daft comments you've made. Standback and admire.

craigyb
On my B2 the cable ran the full length of the car from the rear window to the front fuse box on the drivers side with cable to spare. I took it along the roof liner and down the A pillar. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Mount it in the rear antenna area, there is a section for GPS devices to be mounted in the rear window that is not affected by the reflective glass. [/ QUOTE ] Craig I dont think they make the conection cable that long, so front top sceen seems ok on mine. [/ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ] [/ QUOTE ] My B2 cable runs from rear window (bottom, middle), following rear seat channel to floor, under the rear carpet and then pools in a coil under the drivers seat. There is bags of extra run so i could easily run it through the pillar/roof liner as well. As for speed...I chickened out at 140 on a UK road (not a motorway) last summer and have not gone as fast since. I know for a fact that there was more available if i'd wanted it. I do remember bending the needle on my old 5-series in France once though
IT_S8
151mph in an M3 I have to say that even on a clear empty Autobahn, 150 feels pretty quick, but maybe that was the awful noisy interior of the M3 that sounded hollow and fragile! 151 is as fast as it would go, which just stengthens my theory that 6 cylinders can't really do better than 150 unless you have turbos etc... (sit back and wait for contradicting evidence to flow in) I'm still trying to come up with any excuse to take the S8 on the 'bahns..... Oh, and save for the fuel ;-) Totally agree on the speed inaccuracys. My 8 is out by about 6%, according to the Avic Sat Nav, so I just drive 6% faster than any speed limit ;-)
rothwell
I always thought M3's did a lot more than 151mph, seems a bit slow if you know what I mean. The new RS4 isn't turbo'd is it? Oh no wait... Audi somehow shoehorned a V8 into it.
IT_S8
I think thats one of the many reasons why the RS4 is more desirable than an M3... The M3 is quicker to 60 than my S8, on about 3 days of the year when the roads are perfectly dry. The other 362 days of year though my Quattro beats it hands down. I'm sure a professional driver might be able to get more out of it, but lets face it, most M3's are just for show...
garcon magnifique
I did 45mph on a pushbike once. Overtook a bus too. [ QUOTE ] 257 mph. In a Gti. [/ QUOTE ] I don't believe you. Unless it was black. (Or is red quickest now?)
barrymung
I did 35 on a BSA "Tour De France" bike once! I'd fitted the bike with a speedo and decided to take it for a run down the hill from Salisbury race course. I bottled out at 35 and applied the brakes as the speedo changed from orange to red at that point and thought maybe it signified that something bad was about to happen... I also managed to take my Mini van off the end of the speedo! I estimate I was in excess of 100mph as the pointer was pointing at the milometer! Coincidentally, it was also down a hill, this time on the M4 outside of Bristol. Considering the state of the vehicle (An ex-Southern Electricity Board van, with side windows) I'm lucky I didn't die. Killed the engine though but that's a story for another day. In fact, now I think about it I came close to death in that car many times. Great times! barrymung
[ QUOTE ] Last time I looked into this I remember seeing that most cars indicating 70mph were doing near 66-67mph and very consistently so. Doubling that speed and allowing for a linear difference at your speeds you would probably be indicating 7-8 mph too high at the very least. [/ QUOTE ] As far as I know most speedos aren't linear and don't follow a straight line, even dodgytel ones.

Jimbolian
Well no idea of the official speed, but i'll my pic do the talking. Gets there with far too much ease, shame it sits at about 4300rpm.. must get that limiter taken off.

Chris_B
So I'm led to believe, a D3 S8 will get to 160 mph indicated in 5th gear with about 600 rpm left to go before it shifts to 6th gear. So I'm led to believe, this is possible at 3am on a straight and empty 1/2 mile stretch of road, assuming a rolling start at a fair speed. So I'm led to believe, running out of straight road is the only reason this was the highest speed observed, with all of 6th gear left to go at. So I'm led to believe, this 'record' is just waiting to be broken...

sidicks
I did 156mph on the mile straight at Millbrook, and 146 mph on the 2 mile bowl (which equates to around 160mph on the flat, I believe), on my Porsche 911 driving experience. The car was rock solid on the straight, and had potential for another 20-25mph or so, but we ran out of road!! The car I drove on the bowl was a cab, and was more shaky at speed, plus the road had many more bumps etc, making it a much more scary prospect. Managed to get caught doing 109 on the A1(M) a few years ago in my S3 and was 'invited' to leave the car at home for a 2 month period....... Chris_B
I've often wondered if it's possible to somehow get time in your own car at Millbrook, the bowl, apline and handling circuits would be fun to try the S8 out on.

I had my last car, the R32 up to a GPS 155. Both have V6's, both are 3.2's and both are N/A. Both cars felt very planted at that speed, but even 170 in the CSL felt totally fine. Yes there was wind noise, but there was no feeling that it was going to fall to bits. Felt totally solid. Both cars were tested at those speeds legally.
