rothwell
I have just got back from a week away in Poland and of course I drove there in the A8. Anyway, on my way back on a derestricted part of the Autobahn I was trying to keep up with another new style A8, I couldn't overtake but he wasn't loosing me, I felt we where going fast when I looked down it reckons we where doing 165mph, I thought they where limited to 155mph? If just a standard 4.2 can do 165mph what can an S8 do???
Atomic
Speedo accuracy at that sort of rate is somewhat laughable, especially on a older car. It's quite possible you was doing less than 155 and then again it's also just as possible the limiter isnt that accurate as well. I remember quite a few years back when a chap working for me was both overjoyed and anoyed when he got pulled on the A12. He was overjoyed because the coppers equipment recorded him at around 97mph (and hence no ban...) but somewhat frustrated because his car was showing around 115mph! Last time I looked into this I remember seeing that most cars indicating 70mph were doing near 66-67mph and very consistently so. Doubling that speed and allowing for a linear difference at your speeds you would probably be indicating 7-8 mph too high at the very least. Nice to know though and grats presumably all your pistons are still in place?
Chris_B
[ QUOTE ] If just a standard 4.2 can do 165mph what can an S8 do??? [/ QUOTE ] I'm not sure, never had mine over 150. I'd guess that it won't be much higher though - the S8's sprint performance was improved with a lower final drive ratio. Of course D3 A8s have the 6-speed box, so often have drive ratios set for cruising, which improves potential for top speed. A 3.7 litre D3 A8 can reach an indicated 165 mph, even with three people in. The SWB W12, with the same lower final drive than other A8s that the S8 has, went up to an indicated 180 (OK, about enough for another 10 past the 170 mark on the speedo!), and based on speed at half-way to redline in 6th, the D3 S8 should be good for over 200 (indicated), if 450 PS is enough to overcome internal, driveline, rolling and air resistance at that speed. Teacake
Was your hand shaking while you were taking that photo (one-handed at 160mph)? And can we see the picture from a couple of seconds later where the fuel gauge reads empty?

[/ QUOTE ] My new 4.2 TDI speedo (digital or not) is accurate too 1MPH!!! yes one mile per hour and thats on snetterton race track at 135MPH, my GPS system runs in tandum and thats what the accuracy is, however last years 3.0 TDI A8 was reading constantly 4 MPH fast. Obviously Audi are tightening up the readings, just check your speed against a new road angle that will tell you.
Chris_B
GPS based devices won't easily work in the S8 - the UV-reflective windows are also rather radio-reflective too! I'd love to know what the 4.2 TDI could do flat out on Millbrook bowl or something. I suppose you could approximate it by knowing what it does halfway to redline in 6th (if you're brave enough) - I'm (almost randomly) guessing about 90? 996Dean
As for speedo accuracy, my Road Angel shows both my A8 and my 911 always doing 4 or 5 mph less than the speed indicated by the speedo (what ever speed I'm doing). I drove the A8 over 100 (kph) for the first time last week. Still amazingly quiet and refined, and seemed to be returning mid 20's mpg. Very impressed with this car. The downside is that I haven't driven my 911 for 3 weeks, which is worrying...
