Parking Sensor Retrofit (Pic Included)

I did this a little while ago but never posted any pictures up. smashfreakB.gif I got the official Audi Kit and got the paint mixed up at Halfrauds using the paint code (they didn't have it pre-done on the shelf) as it was done on a Sunday so didn't bother going to Audi but it's an exact match. You can't see anything at all in the boot as all the wiring and control unit are concealed behind the bumper and trim inside. Wiring is also very easy to do and instead of using the heatshrink crimps, I got some Scotchlock things from Halfrauds too which made life a lot easier.

I know a couple of you having been asking for pictures so here you go:

Need to do some more Retrofits really but just can't decide what. grin.gif

Yup. There's a circle with a + in the middle of it. The manual recommends a 20mm forstner bit but we found it wasn't quite big enough so got a titanium cone bit and extended the hole a little further and it left an incredibly neat edge too. You just have to get a hacksaw to chop a little recess for the sensors to fit into.

You don't need VAG-COM at all. All you need is some form of drill bit (I'd be recommend a cone bit), some other tools to get the bumper off and everything else in the box. The way the system is activated is by taking the power from the reverse lights. When you select reverse gear, it switches on the lights and then you hear a beep. To set the system up you just need a wall or something to back up against but it needs to be none-metallic.

Finished installation on a Cab today using the Audi retrofit kit. If you are thinking of doing this yourself I would suggest that you use a holesaw rather than a forstner bit as suggested in the instructions. The holesaw also guarantees against drill wander that can very easily happen with the forstner bit on a flexible bumper cover and hand held drill.

The painting was easy - the paint was from Audi so came as a two pack which consisted of base color and lacquer. The kit also includes little rings to ensure that limited paint is applied to the insulation between parts of the sensors. The main difficulty for me was trying to remove the rear seat to install the buzzer (note that I have the Cab and had to run cable behind the rear seat to the buzzer location that is mid way between and just aft of the rear headrests). Removal of the rear bumper was not much fun but it was the first time and had I knew what I know now then this would also have been clear sailing. I can’t say anything about the other aftermarket kits but the Audi kit is nice quality.
