Wobby
I am looking to fit an engine to my Passat. It will probably be removed for repair, just wanting to see what it sounds like to assess the probable internal damage. Will also be nice to physically check all mounts for damage as there is some vibration/ engine movement these days Its a like for like swap with an AWX engine and gearbox. What are the problems and how do i overcome them. Will the replacement engine and existing ECU be happy together or will there be issues? Am i right in thinking i will have problems with the engine immobiliser/ alarm? Will these need VW or can they be sorted out with VAG COM? Any other advice appreciated. Thanks in advance

Mook
Replace the engine and gearbox mounts regardless - you don't say how old your car is, but it will be a lot easier to do it now than to have to replace them in a few months time. You may also want to consider replacing the subframe bushes as well, while you're there. As long as you're replacing the engine with like for like (i.e. 1.8T for 1.8T or 2.0 for 2.0) there won't be any problems with the ECU or the immobiliser as long as you swap over the original electrics to the replacement engine. The only time you need to think about problems with the immobiliser is when you put a 1.8T (or other engine) into an earlier car (i.e. Golf Mk2 or Mk3) that doesn't have the same ignition switch etc., in which case you need to use an "immobiliser defeat". Tobes49
Mook, he did say it was a like for like swap in the first post, Remember to get the air-con degassed as you have to remove the whole front pannel to change the engine and box. Aslong as you use the same engine ECU and just swap the engine, there shouldn't be any problems with Immobilisers Other wise it will just be a case of removing the old unit and fitting the new, Remember you will need, Engine and gearbox oil, engine oil filter, G12 Antifreeze. One last thing, have you got a engine crane?

Wobby
Mook... I am going to check everything while its in bits, i think i will be buying a new steering rack. This "other" engine is only being fitted to see if it runs, i can also see what the gearbox feels like etc. Then i can start to work on which engine is worst for wear and know what spares i have should i break down before its fully rebuilt. The replacement engine is 80k with a blown turbo (at least). My own is now over 200k and runs well.
