Ari
I'm going to buy my son a MP3 player for Christmas. He's nearly 11 so it neeeds to be easy to use, reasonably robust (he's pretty careful but you know how kids are) and of course most importantly, cool. I need something we can load up with plenty of music (and that is easy to do so) for him. I'd like to spend circa £100. I'm guessing I'll get a good one for that? The obvious choice seems to be an ipod nano, they're really cool and seem well regarded. And they're about £99 aren't they? Good choice? Bad choice? Something else a better choice? What do we think? danksy
You get what you pay for IMHO. My Mrs isn't into branded MP3 players, and over the last year has spent enough on throwaway ones at £30 to have justified spending £120 on a decent one in the first place Sounds like a daft question, but he does have a 'pooter to use it with right? Ari
Not a daft question, and no. That's why he needs plenty of storage on it so's he can load it up with his stuff and some of my stuff he likes. Will that work? Totally agree about you getting what you pay for hence thinking of spending £100 on an ipod nano or similar rather than just getting a cheapy from Currys. Sparky
Very much agree with sticking with major brands. I bought a Sony one which has been fantastic, and out performs a lot of other brands in quality of build and sound and ease of use. That is until you use the bloody awful SonicStage software to try and load on songs to the device. As it stands, I will not purchase another Sony MP3 player until they've binned this software. So, stick away from Sony's Ari, at this time. It's a well commented about issue on the Internet too, so not just my opinion. If you want to avoid iPods, then Samsung have won a lot of awards for the USB/Stick type MP3 Players, with over 40 hours of playback from one charge. Of course, a computer really would help make the most of it as he'll want to change the content more often than you think.

Pincher
The new Shuffle is quite good too - only 1GB but should be good for >200 songs (£55 is the regular price too, so you don't have to go to JL)
malagus
I love my Creative zen micro, and despite its flaws, wouldn't trade it for an ipod at all. If I was buying a new mp3 today I would get a zen vision.m, but it is a little out of your price range ari - the creative software is v. easy to use. A 4gb zen V should come in around £100,(given christmas discounting) and if he is tired of the tracks, it has an FM radio too, and displays videos. IMO looks pretty sexy, and less of an obvious expensive piece of kit than the ipod, so less likely to get stolen. here's the url for all creative europe's mp3 devices: http://europe.creative.com/landing/mp3guide/index.html ETA: the zen micro photo 4gb should be a little cheaper, but the design has been around for a while now - mine has a b/w screen and no photo display lol - i think the zen micro photo would at as UMS too. CarMad
After being totally IPOD I'm a bit of a convert. I'd get a 2 or if you can push to it a 4gb Nano. Dixons do the 2gb for £89 or 4gb for £119. If you search for some voucher codes you might be able to get more off.
Mac
If he can't change the music that often I would say 2Gb isn't big enough Also, for ease of use and of coure the school cool factor the Ipod Nano is the clear winner EDITed to add - just looked at my 4Gb nano and it's full and has 70CDs on it. CabGirl
[ QUOTE ] If he can't change the music that often I would say 2Gb isn't big enough [/ QUOTE ] So would I but the budget was £100. My 4gb one still has 1.2gb free so I'm ok for the time being.
malagus
My Zen micro 5gb currently has 1017 track on it, though using creative mediasource audio converted I could reduce bitrate and cram a few more on if i couldn't access a PC for a while - thats with just 128mb partitioned as MSD though. I usually have most of the same albums on, but change a few tracks here and there - as yougsters have rapidly changing taste I woukd say an MP3 with radio would be useful. CabGirl
Just noticed that Makro have the 2gb one for 79.99 + VAT & the 4gb one for 104.99 + VAT. Linky
Ari
Good spot, but with the VAT they're virtually normal high street prices (in fact the 4Gb might even be slightly dearer).
CabGirl
I was only looking a the price for the 2gb one but I guess 6% isn't a huge amount but I thought it was worth mentioning.

lottiefox
I've got a 4GB nano and a 30GB video ipod and use them both loads...especially in the car. I'd definitely recommend them for ease of use and coolness... I do think changing the music is a big part of them though, even if not downloading to be able to change the playlists around and stuff is what makes them entertaining. Would he have access to a friend's puter so he could register his ipod on there and use it to update/change stuff? I think you can register on 5 different puters IIRC? fingermouse
been looking for a mp3 player for my dads car, think it might have to be the 30gb ipod video as it seems to be better value than the nano`s. any suggestions where to get one from ???? Guest PeterPiper
Simple, has to be the Nano, for an extra £19 why worry, that's only about 21 litres of 97 octane!
