collease
Last night i was very thankful to come across a policeman with s bit of discretion. As i was coming home on the A47 at 11 last night i was fluctuating my speed from 60 - 80 on a 60 limit depending on if there were other cars coming the other way. Unfortunatly i did this with a traffic car sitting right on my bumper for about 6 miles. Now if i had paid a bit more attention to my mirror i may have seen it but the realisation of oh poo its an officer of the law only came when i exited the roundabout at a rather brisk pace. This brout the lights on and forced me to stop. THe nice policeman actually let me off although i was fully expecting a ticket but he told me he only pulled me because i had exited the roundabout at an unsafe speed. The rest of the driving was not seen to be dangerous even though it was above the limit.I would like to thank Mr Policeman for not shafting me like he could and probably should have. I was not expecting to get off and was fully accepting of the consequences that probably should have. Note to self check mirrors more regularly and also dont speed on the A47 as next time i may not be so lucky.

felixthecat1
[ QUOTE ] You didn't see a car sat right on your bumper for 6 miles? [/ QUOTE ] With all due respect to you. He should have shafted you for not spotting him for six miles. If ever you see a car behind you when you intend to seed like that, let him pass! Have a look, if he actually wants to make progress he'll be off up the road, if he's Plod, well, you'll soon know. And follow the basic rule, make sure there's always a bigger idiot than you near by just to attract the attentions of the Police away from you, works for me. EssFour
I had a similar experience a year or so ago. Got off with a warning. But that was probably due to him being on his way back to station and the fact he was on his own. Said I was averaging over 90mph. Although I know for a fact he had not been following me for 1 mile. peterb
I think I've posted before about my enthusiastic drive along the A148 between Fakenham and Holt one dark evening - I was reaching speeds of up to 90 (all single carriageway), and overtaking, aware that another car was following at some distance, but not quite managing to keep up. I stuck to the two 30 limits we passed through - it was only when we reached the street lighting in Holt that I was able to confirm that it was a police car behind me. The plod seemed happy, and peeled of in another direction at the roundabout.

collease
I had no complaints with beiing stopped but i think as i was slowing down every time a car came the other way it may have made him think i was at least being respectful of other road users. In my defence i saw the car but could not make out any visible lights or marking to give the game away. Its was only after he turned them i twigged. But he was a nice bloke and i wont be doing stupid speeds along there for a long while its just not worth it.

Wife thinks I'm nuts but I do have a clean license [/ QUOTE ] I'm not going to go on a major rant, but I have to say I find these statements puzzling. Look in your mirror every 30 seconds I check my mirror every 5 seconds or so as it enables me to know where I am in relation to all the other drivers around me, it enables me to know my relative speed compared to them and IMO makes for a lot safer lane changing. Collease I find the bit about slowing down when drivers come towards you odd, I appreciate why you might do it, but I am alot more assured with a driver that can maintain a consistent speed rather than a driver that constantly alters their speed for something that should have no effect on the progress they are making. NeilB
I'm obsessive with checking my mirrors to, it always allows me to process an escape plan if the need arises and makes me spot the nutters in plenty of time to give them room. DanG
I was stopped a few weeks back on one of my trips to the UK (which is a bad thing as the speed limits are higher and I drive like a loon). Cop was excellent..... I was well over the limit for about 4 miles as I was trying to get away from him, as he had just cut me up on a roundabout and then when I overtook him on the dual carriageway he sat 3 foot off my rear bumper. (Thought he was an idiot boy racer). Anyway lets just say it was all OK in the end and he was a very nice guy about the whole thing when he had me on film driving like a nutter. I now drive much slower as a result........

Luke
This reminds me of the time when I popped out for a can of coke for the Mrs one evening a few years back. I was in my then brand new Golf VR6 highline. The weather was good it was just getting dark so the trip was a bit longer than i first imagined. After some spirited driving a car came up quick behind but then held back and I moved away. After a couple of mins things looked all ok, so i made the mistake of testing the VR6 engine up a steep open 2 laner with nothing in the way. Oops looking in the rear view I could see the blue haze of the lights bouncing of the signs and bridges. The worse feeling in the world? Oh yes. Tracked me for the completet test of the engine with an average speed of 104mph, little ticket to go and see the beak free of charge. Anyway gave them the suit and tie and self employed angle and got away with 6 points and £500. This was 1999. What I was annoyed about is that they could have pulled me over for say 80-85 and done me there and then but obviously they weren't worried that i was doing say 125 at one point because they could get a better nick. All seems like a distant memory know but I can remember still thinking about getting someone to drive me around if I got banned.

[/ QUOTE ] So your telling me that me doing 80mph when there is a car coming the other way on a single carageway that is one of the most dangerous stretches of road in the county is safe i think not. Thats why i slow down. I would rather have them pull across ito my lane (this happens regularly on this stretch) and hit me at 60 than 80. I dont break hard and would not do it if there was a bloke right up my arse but as the plod at time was being left behind as i accelerated as i slowed he closed the gap keeping track of what i was doing. I would never go past anyone coming the other way on a single carrige road at a speed i would find stupid for the road i'm on. I have respect for my life as well as others and so dont feel like putting inocent people at risk by me doing stupid speeds past them when i dont need to. It only takes one a gust of wind or for me or them to have a single laps in concentration and the results could be catastrophic.

garcon magnifique
It's a good job collease is used to all this pisstaking... Of course, it's not easy to keep a constant speed and focus properly on everything around you when there's a pair of bright lights right behind you...
