RedRobin
....I nearly wrote "RedRobin gets Roger'd"!! . As everyone who reads my posts knows, I have been very cautious about remapping and have also been biding my time to be confident that the tuners had settled their offerings for the Mk5 GTI - Especially for DSG versions. Plus I made the decision a long time ago to leave remapping until after the main 'hardware' mods and I'm still confident I made the right decision about that. I wasn't dissatisfied with the standard performance but it was always going to make better use of the exhaust/CAI/suspension/brakes mods to eventually remap. I hadn't intended to remap until after my VW warranty period but a chat with my VW dealer changed all that when he said he was cool about it. So is my insurance - Zero extra premium!! One of the few advantages of being much older and with a good record I guess. The remap: Revo Stage1 software plus the 'select' switchability with anti-theft immobilising feature. It's early days having only done 140 miles with it and I'll doubtless add more to this thread. Well, where do I start? - She suddenly goes like a scolded cat!! (sorry, lottie!). Power doesn't come in too early, so she's still practical on the school run through town, but when power is applied and she does come.....She's orgasmic! Obviously according to how you use your right foot, the power is very progressive and even. Higher torque means that she pulls very well, even in 6th. In fact, you think she's in 4th and then find she's in 6th. She feels even looser after the remap even though I have done 23K miles. I went to JKM in Portsmouth for my Revo and am well impressed. A family biz with Jim doing tuning and sister Kate (nice TT owner) on reception and organising everybody and stuff (a gal who seriously knows her car bits!). They've been into cars since they could literally walk - Their Dad was into it. So, lots of experience for their young years and lots of enthusiasm and great award-winning (Motor Trader) personal service - Frankly, what it's all about! First thing Jim discovered was that the VW ECU software wasn't the latest! Was IKO 907 115A 0050 and so Jim loaded 0060. Rolling Road (Dyno Dynamics of Australia) my car as stock showed 197 bhp (AmD had shown 206 bhp) with 221 ft.ilb (identical to AmD). Apparently DSG shows about 10 bhp less and DD are working on a mode upgrade to cater for 'automatic' cars. Plot immediately after the remap showed 224 bhp and 290 ft.lbs but we'll get a more meaningful plot after the ECU has settled in a couple of weeks. Rolling road figures aren't the most important thing IMO - I think it's much more important how she feels and drives. The torque curve is massively improved between 2,200 and 4,000 revs. The Milltek Hi-flow+Downpipe plus the Carbonio cold air intake both come into play more with the remap. Revo Stage2 with my setup would be more aggressive. The engine sounds as if it's working harder after the remap even though the revs aren't increased. The turbo will be working harder but still well within its capabilities. The exhaust seems a wee bit more growly and the cars doesn't sound so harsh when snogging the red zone - So far. After JKM I visited Oli, who had a Revo'd GTI before his R32, and it's as he had always been telling me - "It's what the GTI should have been". I guess that the Ed30, being 230 bhp, is similar to mine - Actually, No! Exhaust/CAI/suspension/brakes again! B-R-A-K-E-S !! is what I would recommend to everyone who remaps their Mk5 GTI - Not because the OEM brakes aren't effective but because the AP Racing brakes are so much better and perfectly match and balance that extra performance and it adds up to a better balanced and safer package. The trouble is that the suspension also helps the package too.... Slippery Slope Time! With Power comes Responsibility, and so this is a car I'll be switching back to stock for visits to the dealer to test drive. I don't expect there's a lot to choose from between the established tuner's offerings. I know that several TSNers have Revo'd their Mk5 GTI, so it'll be interesting to hear their comments too. Five Star!

mikemod
290 ft.lbs = 393Nm - is that not way above the recommended max for the DSG Sounds good Robin, How did the extra insurance premium work outut ?

He seemed extremely impressed with my AP brakes and said that although there are cheaper ones out there, there's none which are so good. Mine was the first Mk5 GTI he'd driven with the APs. He's already told one of his customer friends who has a heavily modded Stage2 Revo Skoda about the brakes and he wants some too!! Too many people forget the brakes Btw, I forgot to mention that since I fitted the Carbonio CAI, I could hear the turbo softly whistle at about 1,200-1,500 revs, but after the remap the soft whistle is more audible but not at all obtrusive - I like this!! Tuners have been telling me that around 300 ft.lbs is okay for DSG. 290 is the peak point of my current graph and it's fairly even from 2,900-3,400 at 285 ft.lbs. It's going to be more meaningful when we rr in a couple of weeks when ECU is more settled.

So I guess people can hear it outside the car. It's not one of those spinning-spooling sounds you hear on some other cars, but a soft whistle like the wind in a storm. Very easy to live with and enjoy. it's the Carbonio which is encouraging it methinks.
RedRobin
JKM's reputation is clearly deserved . They are people who are enthusiasts and who care. I was impressed by my phone conversations with Jim, even before I met them. There are Revo tuners much closer to where I live but I chose JKM. Hmmm....The sun is out, the skies are blue, and the road looks dry - I'm tempted just to go for a 'test' drive!

P_G
RR, why did you chose REVO against Abt / Weltmeister in the end then? I have similar dilema's, and Weltmeister is winning at the mo as my local REVO dealers don't have a 4WD rolling road.
RedRobin
I was very impressed by Abt/Weltmeister but the switchability and anti-theft feature of Revo swung it for me. Plus the reports I got from other Revo'd GTI TSNers. The switchability is quite an important consideration. Although Weltmeister would very happily switch back and forth for me before/after servicing etc, they are located a fair distance away from me. IMO you have to work with and not against your dealer, particularly due to the sophisticated nature of OEM ECUs and their manufacturer's upgrades. I would still recommend Abt/Weltmeister to anyone. Their Technical Director knows his stuff and would probably be the one doing the tuning. Another consideration was how much I liked Jim and Kate who own and run JKM in Portsmouth - Not the closest Revo tuner to me but they give me confidence and are enthusiasts. bmx
thats some serious torque redrobin what is the torque steer like? and whats traction like? i would have thought the bhp would have been higher tbh or is that about right?
petsy
bhp figures should have been higher seeing his intake and exhaust mods but RR bhp figures have to be taken with a pinch of salt.
RedRobin
Re the bhp figures - Possibly an extra 10 bhp might be added because the rr isn't programmed for DSG. Also, as I stated before - rr figs won't be worth taking much notice of until the ECU has settled down in a couple of weeks or so. The Hi-flow exhaust doesn't deliver all it's capable of unless the more aggressive Stage2 code is loaded. It's helping a lot at my Stage1 and was also helping when I was standard but not adding many bhp. It greatly improves throttle response and most engines like air in and gases out as efficiently as possible, so imo it's still worthwhile. Anyway, it sounds nice! Torque is actually limited by Revo to about 300 ft.lbs on DSG cars. Abt would also limit the torque to the same figure. Even the Mk5 GTIs across the pond (America) running around on 400 bhp have their torque limited to 300 ft.lbs. The bhp and torque plots are quite independent - So if I ever moved up to Stage2 and say 270 bhp, my torque would remain at 300 ft.lbs max. Revo have remapped and thoroughly tested lots of DSG GTIs apparently.

[/ QUOTE ] ....Torque steer? - I haven't experienced it yet but I haven't pushed to those limits as yet. ....Traction? - At the moment it's the perfect testing conditions - Greasy! My driving style on a performance car is always 'delicate throttle control' and to feed the power progressively and I tend to cut back slightly as soon as traction starts to get lost. So, I'm experiencing a wee bit of TC flicker but not a problem so far. I did boot a bit too strongly yesterday at about 60 and spun the wheels but only for the briefest time before TC etc came to the rescue and grip was regained. I've done that in the standard car on a wet night so I don't find traction a problem so far. It's not as if I wheelspin in every gear which jaysgti was getting after his QST remap and which I would have rejected as unsuitable for road use. ....bhp? - It is expected to be higher when ECU settled - Probably around 240 bhp but it depends on the day etc etc etc. Too much emphasis on these numbers imo. Driveability is what it's all about IMO. I need to do more testing to report further on these questions.

RedRobin
Hey, Jimmy Looks like a queue for a ride could be forming: Rich Sam Jimmy No problem. Whether a "tinkered" GTI sees off a standard .:R I think must depend very much on the driver, but I know what you mean - Simply that a modded GTI is a fast car. There won't be any changes in the top speeds etc but I suppose that IF grip isn't an issue then a remapped GTI will certainly accelerate like sh!t off a shovel (or a scolded cat).
