wyliss
Could anybody please explain the difference ? Cheers
Cupramax
Multitronic is a CVT transmision i.e. constantly variable, no gears. Tiptronic is a conventional auto box with paddles.
Fergy
A point to remember. the Multitronnic engine note is very monotone unless in manual mode. The Tip has better notes IMO
Chav
Utter tosh. The gearbox doesn't affect the engine tone at all!!!!! The multitronic box is absolutely fecking fantastic. If they could make one that could handle 500Nm+ of torque it'd be a godsend! It's mega economical, keeps the optimal torque curve when flooring it, and it's so smooth you wonder if you're even moving. The tip is just a bog standard auto. Nothing clever about it at all really. Crapper performance and economy than a manual - not true of the multitronic. Hopefully audi will either make a multitronic box that can be used with V8's/V10's, or big diesels, or they'll sort out DSG/quattro for the whole range. richspeight
I'd go along with Chav. The Multitronic is a fantastic gearbox: economic when you're pootling around town (I get 30mgp from a 3 litre V6!); keeps you on peak torque under normal acceleration (it's weird, at first, seeing the speedo move, but the rev counter stay steady!); yet goes for the red line when you floor it. So, engine note is there when you want it (especially with Millteks!), but nice and relaxed when you don't. I think the only reason they still do the old fashioned Tiptronic is that they've not got the Multi sorted for high load applications (high torque engines and/or 4wd). The only other gearbox I'd ever consider is the DSG/S-tronic -- and only then in a more overtly sporty car (saving for an R8, maybe even a Veyron ). S4teve
Absolutely right - the S4 and other Quattro models would be fitted with a S-Tronic type box if there was one. If you are considering an auto you should let your model derivative be your prime concern i.e Engine size and 4WD / 2WD. You will find either g/box will be suited to the car. My S4 is tip and my first auto car and I think it's a great box. If you really want to change gear you can get a near manual response from it (with practice). My main concern was on track but it held up really well in manual mode.
wyliss
Being a 'manual' type of guy would you guys prefer it over manual in one of these cars ?
MarskeBear
tiptonic is cool as you dont need to take your hands off wheel so rapid change is name of the day. i like it in th demo/loan cars i have had. If it was availale on the sline Se i would have had it.
DaveJ
I was set on getting a manual in the S4. I drove both and ended up with the tip. I think its great ... as is multitronic which I had in the prev 3L. I have never driven a B6 S4 tip, but I find the gearbox great. Normal Drive is ok for pottering, Sport mode is great for press-on driving but I use manual mode in the wet or when I am making the most of the car - and I think the paddle change is fun. Its not as good as DSG or the SMG in the M3 - but then a cab is more of a cruiser anyway. In Manual mode the auto seems to lock the torque convertor and hold on to the revs which is great. So in summary - tip is great - best of both worlds ... multitronic is great to (apart from the very early ones) but the best advice is to have a drive... Fergy
[ QUOTE ] Utter tosh. The gearbox doesn't affect the engine tone at all!!!!! [/ QUOTE ] Sorry Chav have to disagree again. Maybe its because Ive also had a A3 2.0T Sportback with the DSG and the engine note was a lot sweeter. In the A4 with multitronic when accelerating the tone doesnt change as no gears are shifted. Phantom
I know what you mean Fergy, as there is no step change in the gearing you lose the sensation of it 'sounding' as though it is stepping up through the gears. It took a bit of getting use to in my old cab, at first it felt like driving a dodgem car or milk float !, you either had the accelerator on or off. Having said that the CVT is a great gearbox, effortless, when it worked properly, and in the case of the 2.4 very economical as well. I now have tiptronic and to be honest I don't mind this and I don't really miss the CVT. At least I know that the tip is going to be a bit more reliable, well hopefully
TDiAvant
I had a test drive of a tip and a manual S4 and there was a difference in the sound, I’m not saying it’s better or worse just different.
P_G
I've noticed a difference in tip and manual exhaust sound as well.

SPLiiX
My Sister had a 1.8T Cab with Multitronic and I thought it was crap!! You don't know what gear your in and you think there is something wrong - I just did not feel in control. My Mum has a Sportback 2.0 T FWD with DSG and at first I thought it was a bit tempramental but after a play about and a good run on a back road I fell in love with it. (I loved the "Atomic boomb" sound when it changes gear under half accelaration!! I wish I had gone for Auto but it would have to be DSG!! I think it's a personnal thing but I woudl advise anyone to test drive first!
CabGirl
I tested a 3.0 Multitronic for a few days before I ordered my cab and I thought it felt sluggish. Others on here have loved it so as Spliix says you really need to have a good test first.
robpink
Tiptronic maybe older technology than multi but I have found it to be totally reliable(just traded in my 2.5q tip after 160000 trouble free miles)without needing the 40000 mile oil changes that the multi 'box needs,+ tip can handle massive torque(RS6, A8 W12 etc). Looking forward to A4 B8 with S-tronic(DSG)

You don't know what gear your in [/ QUOTE ] The answer to that is easy - there's only one gear! CVT is more efficient than a traditional auto and is able to give you torque and power as required instantly. However, there is no denying the constant engine note is a little off putting. cosmicblue
In the last two years I've covered: 25,000 miles in a 1.8T Multitronic 34,000 mikes in an A3 TDI DSG And now the Cab with Tiptronic The DSG is the best by far (but not available in an A4) and like the Multitronic the clutch arrangement that replaces a conventional automatic's torque converter results in a slight (and often worrying) delay/hesitation when pulling away from rest. Both will select the highest possible ratio (lowest engine RPMs/optimal economy) unless Sport mode is selected. I absolutely love the DSG and got to seriously respect the Multitronic - it is just 'different' - the 'manual' bit is just daft as there aren't any gears as such so who is kidding who? Both DSG and Multitronic are utterly seamless - there isn't any sensation of 'changing gear', indeed in the DSG if it wasn't for the digital gear indicator in the DIS you wouldn't know. The Tiptronic is nice, smooth and old fashioned in comparison with the other two - cruising through town in 3rd gear when there is a ton of torque available just screws the fuel consumption without valid reason. Don't get me wrong the Tiptronic is really nice though it is showing its age now - transmission technology has moved on considerably.
