plantplanet
My diesel is on the go slow, any ideas? The car is A3 1.9 TDI Sport (110) with superchip to 135bhp. In all gears you hit about 2500-3000 rpm and it seems to stop accelerating, you can push it through, but seems like loss of power. Possibly something to do with air/fuel? Any ideas before I face the inevitable £75 per hour at Audi? Darren
fatcat
My first port of call would be to Superchips themselves. Where are you based, if you can get along to one of our meets someone may be able to help wih the VAG-COM, this will show any faults (I think) and maybe help pin point the problem. Sorry, but I can't help on your main issue !
Mollox
Sounds like it could be a dodgy Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) to me but its very dangerous to speculate these things like this. As Pete said, see if you can get anyone to plug in a VAG-COM and see. Failing that, if you don't want to feel the force of Audi dealer rates, you could try an independent VAG specialist who will have no problem diagnosing and save you a few £'s to boot. Good luck
spacelord
For what it's worth, I just got a used A3 (2001,TDI, 110BHP, 80000km on the clock) as my interim company car and I'm experiencing something similar. It accelerates fine until the high 2000's (rpm) but then it seems to run out of breath. It's especially annoying on the motorway, even if I floor it I can hardly get to 160kph and it takes forever to reach that speed. Now I don't know if this is normal behavior for this car with this engine spec, but I have to say that I expected a bit more from a 110bhp engine in this size car. The next service interval is in 5000km, so I guess I'll ask them to have a look at it then. I just hope they won't brush it off saying there's nothing wrong with it. Burti
I had exactly the same problem on my A4 1.9tdi 110, it turned out to be the MAF, soon as they replaced this the car felt great to drive again
Mollox
Spacelord, take it in sooner. I had the 110Tdi in my Golf and that's not normal at all. Power dies down just after 4,000 rpm and completely at 4500ish but thats normal from the TDi engine. I also used to get 205/210 on the speedo easily from it so its not right. spacelord
Yeah I had already heard that a faulty MAF is a common thing to go wrong with VAG TDI engines. I'll get it booked in for service asap. Would it be expensive to fix? Also, the previous driver (my now ex-colleague) mentioned something about excessive oil usage, though he didn't specify how excessive ... is that a symptom of a faulty MAF as well? spacelord
Update on the slow TDI: some idiot was tailgating me on the motorway and bumped into me this morning! At first glance, I only had some small cracks in the rear bumper, and that would just be a matter for the insurance companies to sort out anyway. When I drove off though I noticed that all the pull was gone from the engine. I could only *just about* reach 110kph and accelleration was dog slow. I first assumed that it was some kind of emergency engine program that gets activated in case of an accident, but when I took it to the dealer, they said there was no such thing. Anyway, it's in the shop right now and hopefully it will be ready tonight. The mechanic did say he suspected the MAF sensor as it is a very common problem with TDI engines. Spacelord are you up for a meet in Essen, Germany on December 6th it's for a motor/tuner/aftermarket show of some sort, and it's huge....drop me a PM or keep an eye on the meets section. spacelord
Update: they put in a new MAF and the car just flies now!!! It really is like a totally different car, you guys were right I should have taken it in a lot sooner. Gambba: yeah the mechanic seemed to know his stuff, he explained me nicely what the MAF did and why it failed sometimes and that it was really a problem VAG was still struggling with. Re. december 6th ... I'm afraid I'll be in the US then, so can't make that.

[/ QUOTE ] Not just a problem with VAG, a lot of cars use MAF's and purely by the function of the MAF it will be vunerable until a technology is found that can monitor air speed and temp without being directly exposed to the air....which is hard to do.
