However I would have though that as the air intake sits quite high up (at the top of the grill) water should not be too much of a problem. Also aftermarket Air intake systems like Carbonio do not have a lip, I wonder if they have problems with water getting to the filter?. [/ QUOTE ] So you recon that sitting behind a juggernaught on the motorway in the wet you wont get much water hitting that intake? I would guess in heavy rain it'll be stopping an awful lot. [/ QUOTE ] Ok, Ok agreed . In the situation you describe I'm sure it does make a big difference. Whats the point in getting an aftermarket intake system then ie CAI? richie_b Posted December 20, 2006 Report Share Posted December 20, 2006 I think this is related to directing air currents rather than water: For a give speed, and set sized opening, you will only get a set volume of air going through this duct. (hence the aftermarket intakes would be larger). This lip seems to just subtly shift the dynamics of the air flow so more goes through the bottom part (hence the lip sweeping the air downwards, creating more of a 40/60 split throuh the 2 ducts sat behind it). Removing this lip therfore simply alters the ratio of this air flow split. i.e. what you add to one hand, you take away from the other.... Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

[/ QUOTE ] ....For what it's worth I've got the Carbonio CAI fitted to my Mk5 GTI and have been through some seriously heavy rain and flooded country roads without any problems.
