[Audi A3/S3] Instrument cluster dead

Can't believe, it... my S3 has not had a single problem in over 4 years and now it's had two in as many months

Yesterday morning I start the car only to get a coolant level warning light shocked.gif

Pop the bonnet and check the level and it's fine. Restart, problem goes away. Oh well just one of them things perhaps.

I arrive at work and as I pull into the car park the dash pod goes completely, no speedo, no tacho, no DIS all dead dead dead, but the car is still running.

I check the fuses and see that the instrument cluster fuse has blown, so relatively relieved that it'll only be a few pence to fix. Replace fuse, blows instantly frown.gif

Now the car won't start.

As I turn on the ignition I can hear the fuel pump kick in, I can turn over the engine and it sounds like it is going to start and then just dies.

Audi seem to think the dash pod will need replacing but obviously need to get it hooked up to test it.

Has anyone seen anything similar ? I'd like to go in armed and sounding like I've heard about this from other people so I don't get too rolled over smile.gif

To be honest it would make sense that if the car detects a problem with the instruments it won't start, I mean not knowing how fast you are going or being able to see if there are any warning lights may cause a problem hey wink.gif

...if it does house the immobiliser then ouch ! it could be expensive shocked.gif

I seem to remember that there were issues with the TT blowing dash pods, or may be it was just the DIS, I'm not sure, but any input is welcome

Im guessing its a dealer job.

The TT's did have dodgy dash pods, but it wasnt so much blowing fuses, but disco needles and incorrect fuel gauges etc.

I have no idea what is fed off the dashpod fuse, but if a sensor (lets say the coolant sensor) was fed from the same fuse or dashpod, and failed, then the broken shorted sensor would blow the fuse making everything attached dead.

Definately got a short somewhere along the loom. Shame it had to affect the dis. Fixing the short 'may' mean that the dash pod is still ok and might only need a resync for the immobilser. Worse case would be the fault trace for the short and a replacement pod which i know is pretty darn expensive. If its the pod then try to source a 2nd hand one provided that the dealer is will to resync the 2nd hand one including your mileage. If they only do your immobilser then dont worry as you can get the mileage corrected legally. But make sure you do your homework before hand.

Good luck
