gizze
As the title says really, what is the cheapest way to get the Vag Com so I can programme my car now I have put the Nav in it. It is a 2004 build A4, all I want to do is get the DIS working, and be able to tell the RNS-E that it is right hand drive, instructions coming out of left speaker at the moment. PetrolDave
Go to a meet and get someone there with VAG-COM to do it for you?
gizze
I know, that's probably what I will do. However it would be nice to know what I can/can't do with the cheaper dongle and freeware software?

PetrolDave
Early versions of VAG-COM are not very useful with the RNS-E since they can't read/write some of the higher number adaptation channels. IIRC you need 509 (or something like that) or later - which rules out most of the cheap leads. And it you want to be able to code the Bluetooth module then the latest versions of VAG-COM are a MUST - there's been lots of people trying to code it using old versions and third party cables and getting nowhere - using a genuine cable and up-to-date VAG-COM solved all their problems. Personally, I wouldn't consider anything less than the genuine item - I value my sanity (well, what's left of it!!!).
gizze
Thanks guys, so is this what I need?? http://www.ross-tech.com/Merchant2/merch...ory_Code=VAGCOM
Paul
Personally I would plumb for the HEX-USB+CAN for a more future proof lead. It will cater for any CANBUS requirements which later cars need. Its the lead I bought. http://www.ross-tech.com/Merchant2/merch...ategory_Code=IC will cost you another £50 over the KeyUSB (according to xe.com exchange rates) but it the more flexible choice. gizze
Yeah you may be right. Although I only want to do a couple of things rather than take it to the dealer, so starting to get expensive. Anyone want to rent theirs out for a week?? PetrolDave
Unless you have a car based on the Golf V platform (when a micro-CAN would be fine), I'd suggest the HEX-COM+CAN too (it's what I've got), but check your laptop has a serial port. If not you need a HEX-USB+CAN. Don't try using a USB-serial converter, Ross Tech report lots of problems with them.
gizze
Well I got a cheaper one, but didn't want to know with channel 56 the radio/nav. Does everything else, but not the bit I really wanted. So ordered the full hex-com+can.
Vertigo1
I so fancy a VAG-COM for general messing about but really can't come up with a good enough reason to buy one The Micro-CAN version would do me as I have an A3 and with the current exchange rates it'd only cost about 120 quid but then I'm likely to get hammered for VAT and delivery too. BTW Dave, I drove an RS4 today and now officially hate your guts! You lucky lucky lucky *******!
PetrolDave
[ QUOTE ] I so fancy a VAG-COM for general messing about but really can't come up with a good enough reason to buy one [/ QUOTE ]I keep finding settings that I can change from the factory default to make the car behave as I want it do - just re-enabled the extra wipe after a screenwash today (disabled by default on B7s). I would feel lost without my VAG-COM now. [ QUOTE ] BTW Dave, I drove an RS4 today and now officially hate your guts! You lucky lucky lucky *******! [/ QUOTE ]Why do you think I'm so happy now! Every drive just leaves me grinning like a Cheshire Cat - even after 6 months and over 7000 miles. No other car I've owned has been this much fun to drive. Do you have a link which explains where/which code needs changing? It's something I'd like to enable, if possible.
Vertigo1
My last A3 had the extra wipe a few seconds after the wash-wipe but the new one is different. There's now no extra wipe but instead the final downstroke of the wash-wipe cycle is about half the normal speed. I presume both systems are intended to remove stray splashes from the screen but they've decided the slower final sweep is a more effective system.
