Q7 fuel consumption .........ouch !

Had diesel A4s and A6s for the last 7 years and always got good economy. Averaged 38mpg overall from the last one, a A6 2.7tdi quattro tiptronic before moving up to the current Q7 3.0tdi quattro tip. Expected a dip in economy and wasnt dissapointed but still manage 34mpg on motorway runs and a good 28mpg overall for the 4k miles of country B roads, motorways and central london queues since I have had it.

The fuel economy isn't going to be the painful part of the ownership of these cars - its going to be the tyres. My dealer reckons the average life of a set is going to be around 7-10k miles and this seem to be bourne out by experiences of other drivers seen on some forums.

The Q7 is the worst car I've ever driven! I can't believe how sluggish the 3.0tdi is - its a pocket rocket in an A4 - but in a Q7 it's like driving a metro 1.1

And it handles like shite too. I'm amazed they sell any to be honest - especially with consumption figures like that from a diesel.

ps. it doesn't improve much over time either.

I've had my 3.0 TDI Q7 for just over a year. It does NOT handle like a barge at all and making comparisons to an A4 saloon is absolute nonsense. Infact it hugs the road very well with minimal body roll and has tons of quattro grip. It is not a sports car obviously, but compared to other cars with similar weight/dimensions, it is as good as any. The acceleration in S mode is pretty good and gets better as you move up the rev range. This does impact on economy however. For the record, I average 28-30 mpg on A-road bias driving.

Sorry mate, but we all have different opinions.

In mine it DOES handle like a barge. I've driven plenty of 4x4s (X5, RR, XC90, Rav4 etc) and it handles much worse than any of them! In fact, I thought it was sodding dangerous. As for the brakes - they're a joke.

The acceleration is dire compared to the competition.

Q7 has poor boot space too. Nowhere near tall enough boot for a big dog.

20mpg from a 2.7TDI?

Something must be really wrong with it. I run an A6 2.7TDI quattro and do all B road driving to work with a nice country lane bit for about 8 miles as well. I have averaged 30mpg since the car was new and on a long run get well over 40 at motorway speeds.

I also give it a good workout as I Iove the 4WD on those B roads, but if you are only getting 20mpg I would suggest its stuck in third gear or something. That is really bad!

Indeed a forum is all about opinions and hence I am responding to your email which I thought was off the mark. I too test drove the main competitors and found that the XC90 D5 is ponderous, the X5 is a better drive but not very spacious (and it's ugly), the Discovery has much more body roll and is slow 0-60. I think you'll find most reviews of the Q7 have said its roadholding is very good. Most of the criticism seems to be about ride quality and the physical dimensions. I've had no problem with the brakes and it grips the road around fast bends no problem (take a look at the review in What Car March edition...). No problem with my brakes either.

I use my Q7 to move huge amounts of baby kit and disagree that the boot is small - compare it to an X5 or an ML for instance. You can also enlarge the space by sliding the 2nd row forward slightly and rolling back the luggage cover if you need extra depth. There's still plenty of legroom at the back.

No car is perfect but I feel your hatchet job on the Q7 is a bit harsh to say the least!

Personally, I can't see any problem with the Q7's handling or performance, for a car of it's size. I've driven both the V8 petrol and diesel Range Rovers, and they're positively supertanker in comparison to the Q7.

What makes a huge difference to the Q7 is the tyres, and given Audi's habit of putting several brands of tyre on in the factory, and the variability of Audi dealer techs to inflate the tyres to the pressures printed on the fuel filler flap, every single test drive may feel different, even aside from personal preferences/bias.

Some people like it, some people don't. I'm glad we don't all like the same thing - life would be boring if we did! 169144-ok.gif

Sounds about right as the official figure on combined cycle is 27mpg I think.

On a related note, I think Audi should follow BMW's example and look to develop more fuel/CO2 efficient engines in subsequent updates. Or perhaps they think the Q5 will fill that requirement.
