I am having a midlife crisis I think!

I got sick of spending loads of money on cars, worked it all out recently when applying for a loan for a building project and it hit home.

£11,000 a year on repayments and depreciation alone, then you think you have to earn £18k to get that, and then you have insurance at £800 a pop, and then I was paying another £1500 for a garage for the X1, and realised it wasn't giving me that much pleasure.

I have sold Fiona's X1 and my E350 estate and we are using my daughters T reg Fiesta and I have just bought a 51 plate Merc C220cdi.

Overall really happy with the move, but don't seem to have noticed the extra money, my daughter is also in Greenwich at Uni, so that is costing a few quid.

We shall see how long it lasts!!

Look at it bless, wearing winter wheels and with cloth interior!!

I'd have cloth over leather any day, having had a few cars with leather interiors. Nice for the first six months, then it starts to show signs of wear and going glossy (yes, even in BMWs) then it's like putting your arse on a hot plate in the summer and on a block of ice in the winter - even with seat heaters and all that tut.

Now alcantara is a whole different thing :D

It is in OK condition, but I have a good camera! ;)

The arches have started to see some rust bubbles, nothing major but the previous owner treated them and then painted over with Hammerite, just on the edge, and I was going to get it sprayed, but once I got it I never bothered as it looks OK and you don't really notice unless looking, as the photos show.

If it were a £20k car, or even £10k I would, but for £2k it's not worth it.

I paid £2,200 for it and did the front suspension arms, drop links, and bushes and then a new thermostat, which cost around £600, and it now feels pretty good.

Not worth spending more though as I would never see it back, not on paint anyway, will keep it mechanically tip top while I have got it.

I have just been offered a 51 plate E320cdi estate for a very good price. And I loved my old one, so deciding whether to swap. But considering I have just sorted all the niggles out, and I just got 50mpg on the last tank I think I may well stick with this.

He offered me £1700 part ex for this, but it is worth far more to me than that.

I know, I have had one before.

I do love them though, I loved my S211 as well, but have a soft spot for the 210.

Didn't get on with my 212 at all though, just couldn't gel with it. I actually sold it with a view to buying a C250cdi sport estate, forgot to put in up to a year old in autotrader and this came up down the road, decided to have a look and the idea was to sell the Fiesta and replace it with this and that would give me time to find the right 250cdi (I had sold the 212 E350cdi already).

But I have ended up using this as the main car.

Popped to some friends in Watford today and over the 200 miles it returned 52mpg, can't argue with that. Most economical car I have owned since my '95 1.9tdi A4 manual.

I actually bought a leather interior for this off ebay, it was mint, all still matte looking, but after driving round in this for a fortnight decided to stick with the cloth, so much more comfy.

That's so funny. Just when you think "Wow, that's sensible" then you follow up with something like this. Sounds exactly like something I would do!!!! Ha, brilliant. Boys...
