evodave
Hi guys, first post here. I'm thinking of changing my Phaeton 5.0 V10 Tdi for a A8 W12, but as I'm a chauffeur I wondered if the mpg would be a lot worse. My Phaeton dose about 520 miles at best on an 88 liter tank, crusing at around 80~85mph on the motorway. London to Birmingham turns back 30~33mpg. Over all average is around 24mpg with mixed driving and I probably get around 14~16mpg around London. I used to have a Merc S500 befor my Phaeton which did around 26~28mpg on a run and about 13~15mpg around town. So is a W12 that much worse? Cheers. Dave. edo
Well, I dont have a W12, and I am sure someone like craigyb will be along shortly, but I'm pretty sure you wont be equaling or bettering the tdi Phaeton. My 4.2 V8 petrol will do 28mpg on a gentle motorway cruise, and avergaes between 22 and 24 overall. i cant see a W12 doing better... Why not look at the 4.2 tdi? Woppum
Well mums GTC which has the same engine, just with turbos gets about 15mpg cruising. And the S600V12 bi-turbo does about 19 cruising. My guess is you will see little past the 20mpg mark...
craigyb
Can't really say I've measured the MPG properly, I know last time I did a stop start run in the wet to london and back I was averaging 19.2 MPG. I would expect about 23mpg steady cruising. You really need to hear from ChrisB about stuff like that, as long it goes really fast when I stomp on the loud pedal and I can afford to keep putting liquid gold into that small hole in side, then I'm happy. Golfer
The one I used was admitted a LWB model, averaged 17MPG mixed use, booting it gave 10/12MPG, you will cry when you start using it for work. The 4.2TDI sport would be much better, I get 30 MPG around my local area and up to 39MPG on long runs under 85MPH, start booting and it can drop to 25MPG(the worst i've seen )I give it some where I can and it still way over 30MPG on runs, so all round a better high mile prospect, unless your made of it of course. evodave
Thanks for all your answers. Craig I like the way you think. Thats partly why I was looking at the W12. I can't afford a fast car and something like I drive now, so I try to to swallow the extra cost of the fuel and have a quickish work car. I can't streach to a 4.2 LWB but I have seen seen a 54 plate W12 LWB VERY VERY well speced for £34k. So it looks like I've got some sums to do. Cheers. Dave. Ska
Hello Evodave, welcome to TSN A bit of topic but what colour is your Pheaton? Not a dark aubergine colour with rs6 alloys on there are they?
evodave
Hi Ska, No I'm afaid not, its black. But I think I know the car you're talking about. He's a chauffeur as well. He has 2 small aerials on the roof for his DVB tuner? Its a nice looking car. I can't use those wheels as my car weighs in at a hefty 2600kgs. and if the car you have seen is the one I think it is its a 3 liter so they weigh a lot less. Looks like I may have to give the W12 a miss. If you can squeeze the 28mpg the audi website claims it could do I would be up for it but if it dosent even do 20mpg at best I don't think I can afford it. VW website claims 33mpg for my car and can often get that on a long run, I've even seen 36mpg once. Cheers. Dave.
Ska
Now that you've said that, your right I recall it being a 3.0litre. I was talking to the owner at a carwash in Ruislip
Merlot
I'm waiting to the time when 2nd hand SWB (wouldn't want a LWB) W12's are cheaper than smae age & mileage 3.0tdis'! At the mo I think W12s are still a bit pricey.
Chris_B
[ QUOTE ] I'm waiting to the time when 2nd hand SWB (wouldn't want a LWB) W12's are cheaper than smae age & mileage 3.0tdis'! At the mo I think W12s are still a bit pricey. [/ QUOTE ] Mine apparently sold for £31k with 29,000 miles on it, and as Craig will tell you, it's a well-loaded with extras. Bearing in mind that mine was an SWB, with the lower final drive ratio (as Craig's is), I averaged 17.5 mpg according to DIS in all the time I had it, which was probably 20% motorway/cruise, 20% town and stop/start and the rest was open A-road "rapid" progress. For comparison, the S8 is doing 20 mpg claimed by DIS on the same mix. evodave, you might be better with a 4.0 or (even better) 4.2 TDI, as they chould be as fast as your Phaeton (4.0 TDI) if not perhaps a bit faster (the 4.2 TDI), and they'll be a lot more frugal on those long runs. However, I can understand why you'd want a W12; if the SWB tickles your fancy, it's actually very slightly faster than the S8 in a straight line.
