Mk4 golf MFD problem

Recommended Posts

The mk4 golf does have speed pulse. Mine is 2001, all mk4's after 2000 had it.

There is a speed pulse wire going into the 8 pin iso block but for some reason the MFD is not getting it.

I did get a voltmeter and i was getting around 7 volts on the speed pulse wire whilst driving.

That picture is not a Golf, its a Passat. the two leads i tried are from two different companies.

Today whilst i was driving, i put my foot down a bit and i noticed the volume on the radio did go up. I was told that when the GALA is on max, it should go very very loud. It was not very loud but certainly noticeable.

But the map is still lagging behind, i think i do have GALA but the signal is very low. And its an intermittent fault.

Is there another way to checlk GALA other than putting the volume on full and going for a drive? Is there more of a techinal check i can do?

Don't know for sure if this is true with the MFD, but with the RNS-E you can check the speed pulse value using VAG-COM. I would suspect you can do it with VAG-COM on the MFD too, since they are both VAG sat nav systems.

Don't forget that ALL sat nav systems will be slightly behind your real position. Why? Because it takes the GPS receiver a finite fraction of a second to calculate where you WERE and by then you've moved on! A few car lengths lag between your actual position and the displayed position is absolutely totally 100% normal.

Yes, I know the dash is different - it is the plugs I am wondering about - trying to see if you have a CAN or non-CAN car ?

You can set the gala level in the volume settings which might make it easier to tell if you have gala or not. If your location is about right then you must be getting a GPS signal.

Can you let me know about the plugs - if there are 2 plugs coming from the car (speakers + power) you don't have CAN & it should communicate with via Vag-com, I have a CAN car & have yet to wire up the K-Line so I can't check mine with vag-com.

Gala should be on Pin 5 on the blue 26 pin plug that goes into the back of the MFD & Pin 1 of the black power plug. It should have a blue/white wire feeding it. I had to pick my gala feed up from the blue plug at the back of the clocks as it is carried on CAN in CAN cars.

Im getting about 6 sattelites all the time.

The golf has 2 ISO blocks as standard. I do have the blue-white wire on pin 1 in the black power plug. How do you check with VAG COM if the MFD is getting a definate GALA?

How easy/difficult is it getting GALA from the clocks?

If you have the 2 pin setup then there shouldn't be any need

to get gala from the clocks. It was fiddly more than difficult to pick up the feed from the clocks & as it is quite hard to unplug & reconnect the connectors to the back of the clocks, I will find the pin number for you if you decide to try this.

First things first does your adaptor have the 26 pin plug that goes into the back of the navi unit ?

I have just checked looked at an old connector harness for your car & the gala feed to the navi goes in on Pin 5 of the 26 pin block. So I would check you have continuity between pin 1 of the "power block" & pin 5 of the 26pin block (if you slide the blue plastic bit up you can then slide the plastic block that carries the wires/pins out).

If these have continuity then check for continuity between pin 1 of the male & female adaptors (the Pin 1 GALA is for the stereo rather than the SatNav).

I think it is more likely a connector is at fault than the actual GALA signal itself, by doing these tests you will know if your gala feed can get to the nav unit.

I am afraid I have never talked to my MFD with Vagcom so not sure what can be tested there but may be worth a try if the wires are definitely connected up OK

One final thought - does your adaptor kit have a red button on it as this kills GALA so you can get TV when driving - maybe try this on both settings ?

Thanks mjcb for the help,

The switch i have removed and simply joined the wires together.

Both leads i have got do come with the 26pin connector. Ive check one lead and i am getting continuity between pin 5 of the 26pin block and pin 1 of the 8 pin block.

Im also getting contiuited between on pin 1 on both the male and female plugs, Im doing this test with an LED.

Ill check the other lead tomorrow as its in the car pluged in.

When i had the MFD out the car, i had a voltmeter connected to pin 1 in the male 8pin plug and i was getting around 7 volts whilst driving.

I am afraid it does sound as if you are running out of options - I doubt you would be able to detect the GALA pulses via the Voltmeter but 7V would suggest you are getting some sort of signal there.

Whereabouts are you based as maybe we could swap units or try my vagcom to see if we can diagnose further ?

That is what I would try - though I do worry your MFD just isn't understanding the GALA signal. I remember reading on the navi sites that the GALA calibrates itself but you can also set this within VAGCOM so I don't know if this would be worth persuing via the VAGCOM forum ?

Here is a link that tells you how to adjust the speed pulses via the unit which may be worth a try before you try taking a feed from the clocks gala pulses

Here is the link to the instructions I used to pick up the GALA feed from the clocks - DDin install it is for the Double Din stereo - Navi install as it is this config you need to take the feed from the clocks for - I soldered the wires as didn't fancy taking the clocks out twice (there isn't a lot of room to get the plugs back in) There is also a warning about turning on the ignition with the clocks out as it triggers the air-bag light which only resets via a dealer/vagcom.

Hope you get this sorted

Cheers

Martin

When i set the the pulses to 8 and the correct tyre circumference which is 1930 for my car. After driving the tyre circumference automatically calibrates and it changes to over 2200. This is clearly well out.

Also today i set a destination, if i took a wrong turn, it showed off road for about 10seconds whilst it tried to work out what road im on.
