A4B6
The early B6 A4's 1.8T had 163bhp. What turbo did this have? Was it a ko3 or ko3s? If i want to increase power, what options have i got and how much will it cost? How much BHP can i get on the standard internals?
Cupramax
Ko3s is a myth... they were all ko3 but with various different specs. Someone on the net in the tuning industry decided to call it that one day but if you ask Borg Warner for a ko3s they wont know what your talking about. But yes your 163 engine has the lower powered turbo i.e. not the ko3"s" That engine will map to 190ish hp maybe a bit more if your lucky.
the911sc
Later 1.8T's had a second intercooler also and a 'variable vane' turbo i think. I got 231BHP out of my 190 ps late b6.

Avus_Bub
[ QUOTE ] Ko3s is a myth... they were all ko3 but with various different specs. [/ QUOTE ] Just to back Cupramax up here's a reply from Borg Warner on the very subject [ QUOTE ] Dear Sir, thank you for your interest in our products. First of all, we don't produce any turbo that we call K03S. But I hope I can answer your questions with the following explanations. All the following turbos have the same installation dimensions and thermodynamical performance. The differences are only in the actuator that opens the turbine bypass valve: K03-011 (5303 988 0011) 150 hp, 65 N actuator K03-026 180 hp, 85 N actuator K03-035 180 hp, 85 N actuator K03-044 150 hp, 65 N actuator K03-045 156 hp (Ibiza Cupra), 85 N actuator with 2 ports K03-049 150 hp (Sharan/Alhambra), 65 N actuator The 180 hp versions have an actuator with a higher opening force due to the higher exhaust gas pressure (which is a consequence of the higher boost pressure). Otherwise the valve would be pushed open by the exhaust gas pressure. The following turbos are a further development (since 2000) and have an improved and slightly larger compressor while using the same turbine (still with the same installation dimensions): K03-052 180 hp, 85 N actuator K03-053 150 hp, 85 N actuator K03-058 150 hp/180 hp, 85 N actuator Consequentially, putting a 180 hp turbo on a 150 hp engine will not bring about any change in performance, but putting on a K03-052/053/058 instead of the older versions will bring a slight improvement in engine efficiency. Additionally, with re-mapping the ECU you can achieve about 215 hp without danger of overspeeding the turbo. With the older turbos, 195 hp is the limit. With the K04 that's also commonly used (5304 950 0001) the power output should not be more than 220 hp. That means, changing a K03-052/053/058 against a K04 does not make a lot of sense. I hope that these details answer your questions. If you need more info, one of our service distributors will be glad to help you. Their addresses are on our website www.turbodriven.com. Mit freundlichen Grüßen/Best regards, BorgWarner Turbo Systems GmbH Sales IDS - Technical Support Christian Seibert [/ QUOTE ] I guess this is a good time to post up a graph of a power run I had done on Tuesday evening at Surrey Rolling Road Ltd. A top service by Charlie - Very highly recommended I was very happy with the numbers the torque has been better since the Milltek and it's nice to see it on the graph. The only problem with RR's is heat soak and I'd just driven for 45mins to get there, the ECU started to pull timing and dump fuel at the top end. I might've seen 240+ bhp otherwise. BUT it's the torque that matters and I was very pleased with that. A Special mention to a TSN member who turned up with vag-com to log the runs and check for fault codes (Thank you T) We did find an old lambda sensor code after the 2nd run but by that time the engine was getting a bit heat soaked so it didn't improve the numbers. Oh and this was done on 2 week old Tesco 99!!! I must say that I brimmed the tank on the way home with V-Power and the car was pulling like a train this evening so I'm not sure if I did have some dodgy fuel or not...... [/ QUOTE ] Hi The911sc. Only diesel turbos have variable vane compressors. That is until now, the 911 (997) turbo is the first petrol turbo in the world to use variable vane turbos. Only the A4 190ps 1.8t has twin intercoolers. The 150 & 163 engines have only one on the left. BUB
