strange engine bay noise '97 4.2

car: 97 audi a8 4.2 auto tiptronic 130,000 miles on the clock

i started the a8 up this moring (after driving it hard last night)

and there is a rather strange noise coming from the back of the engine bay(near the bulkhead) a whining noise that changes with engine speed, has anyone had this noise before? im sure its not the engine could it be powersteering rack or he torque converter in the gear box? it make the noise in gear out of gear on the move or stood still

anyone?

The gear box oil pump makes a sort of echoy screaching noise when cavitating and can be heard loudest from the n/s wheel well, with the bonnet down.

It doesn't hurt to check the oil level though but I don't know where the oil would go unless it had a leak somewhere. 169144-ok.gif

right got it over the pit today, it is the gearbox pump that is noisy so i had a look on Audi pages and he explained the exact problem I'm having so i order all the bits to do a oil filter change on the box

i hope this sorts it

had it on the road for a total of 5 hours then this happened and i lost the centre bumper grill, £55 the new one cost me frown.gif

mkoneman, the noise from your car, was it like a 'whirring' niose that was consistant with the engine revs whilst stationary and whilst driving?

Is the gear box oil pump easy to access under the car and is it obvious to spot the pump or is it internal?

My car has had a whirring noise ever since i purchased it about 5 weeks ago now. i put it down to a tensioner making the noise, but feel i could be wrong and this is more serious! What other gbox (if any) problems occured since this noise?

yes it was a whirring noise

the noise is constant with engine speed moving or stood still

the pump itself is not accessible without a gearbox rebuild

the 1st thing to do is change the oil filter in the box £130ish for all the bits from Audi

it started as a hydraulic bleeding noise on start up then one morning didn't go away!! only drove it 5 miles to work where i could get it over the pit to do the work i took the sump off yesterday and left it draining all weekend then ill put it back together next week and let you know how i get on

the easiest way to find out if its the box as it dose echo around a lot is to try and get under the car and then it will come blindingly obvious where the noise is coming from

try and find out jow much of the ATF drains out over the weekend mkoneman 169144-ok.gif

It'll be interesting to see if you get all the 8 litres out, remember only to use the Audi ATF 169144-ok.gif

I'm gonna do a nother Gbox ATF service soon but I also want the fuid in the pipes leading to the oil cooler drained so as to do a complete flush if there is such a thing wink.gif

i got about 5.5 liters stright away but tbh i doubt ill be getting much more out the torque converter after 3 hours of draining it was dripping very slowlly so i just bunged the empty tray back on to catch it over the weekend

it would be interesting to find out if you could get all the fluid out in one go as a 'flush' with audi oil would be very expensive

true but hopefully the 4 magnets in the sump have been doing there job and caught most of the swarf i know its not a full replacement but the filter change alone is worth the job 169144-ok.gif

was it an easy process to do? did you remove the exhausts or leave them in situ and work around them?

Looks like ive got mine to do! plus an engine oil change as sounds a bit tappety on start up (as per other post currently in forum)

Keeps us all posted. Can you post part numbers for the new parts and what year is your nice looking A8? Love the colour and lowered suspension!

yeah you can leave the exhausts in place you just need a really short t27 torx bit to get to the 2 bolts behind the cat

ill find out all the part numbers i used when i get a chance and ill let you know how i get on in the week

my a8 is a 1997 4.2 v8 in blue ming pearl with cream leccy recaros, its running kw variant 1 coilovers,it was a bit of a state when i got it, so far since owning it i have fully removed all the interior inc carpets, rear shelf etc to give it a 100% clean, replace the center and left bumper grill (genuine audi ones £££) put new dunlop tires on it refebed the wheels myself fitted a new rear sunblind motor again ££££,lol. its got a alpine 7 inch flip out screen and kenwood HQ sub ps2 and alpine ipod interface i just need to sort the gbox then give the out side a good claying and polish/wax

not bad for a 23 year old i don't think (i do get some strange look s when I'm driving it) yelrotflmao.gif

does look well! Got my A8 (as per sig) 5 weeks ago. Needs a good clean inside but i don't think i'll be goin quite as far as you! yelrotflmao.gif. Same colour, Ming Blue with ecrue leccy recaros. (best combo imo) Rear sun blind worked 5 times then stopped! so will need to sort that out. Nice low mileage example i got, just the box is the let down i think.

Will look forward to hearing how you get on. ive taken mine off the road today bike.thumb.gif from now on!

yeah i remember looking at one a lot like yours on ebay a little wile back

yeah it is the best combo

its all just teething problems id be board if i didn't have these things to do on it, I'm used to my mk1 golf's so a far as technology goes the is a large advance for me

BTW I've already started detailing my car, begining with the arches and underside of the car. Next up Engine bay detailing and interior weather permitting.

thats just a photoshop i did to see what it will look like when i get round to doing it,

ska, that looks very clean a credit too you i did a bit under mine when i was fitting the coilovers but not to that extent, it was some scary s*** steam cleaning that engine bay i can tell you ill get some more pics up when its all back together

right got it back together tonight and all seems OK atm I'm not getting my hopes up until i have done a cold start in the morning

the whole process was easy as i have the tools and facilities to do it in

here's a list of part numbers for anyone interested

01L35429A oil strainer £23.17

01L325443 gasket £1.27

01L321371 gasket(sump) £14.97

01V321379 washer(s/pipe) £1.08

G052162A2 atf oil £7.81 (x10)

grand total of £118.59+vat

work time of 3 hours i would say

i left mine draining for 3 days and id say it drained a liter extra off for leaving it this long

well worth wile job id say anyone who hasn't had it done get it done now!!
