TyreA4C
Hi All, Has anyone had any problems with the main DIS showing the brake failure warning symbol when engaging Drive or Reverse shortly after starting the car and then extinguishing as if there was no problem? When starting the car from cold the usual checks occur but the handbrake symbol stays on and flashes for about 6 seconds during which if you engage Drive or Reverse the DIS display will show the main brake failure symbol. I’ve attached a rather poor movie of the display with the hope that some one can shed some light on this (ignore the multiple beeps of the reverse sensors). Camberley Audi have looked at this under warranty but after three attempts at them rerouting the cables past the battery (apparently this has in the past caused interference) and a forth attempt that involved changing the battery the problem still remains. Each time Camberley Audi says they have sorted the problem but when I start the car the next morning or much later that day the annoying bleep and symbol present themselves. I’ve lost most of my confidence in Audi over this and now need to turn to those more likely to know the solution – you guys. Any help will be much appreciated. 1114391-MOV00008.zip
J_C
Have you checked the brake fluid level?
TyreA4C
Brake fluid fine, pads still have plenty of life. Also the cars computer log holds no record of the "failure".

TyreA4C
Sparky, thanks, how can I test the sensor? But why would the handbrake light flash??
kite
Camberley fixed this problem on mine by rerouting the cables. Not had the problem since
Sponge
I get a similar fault with my car. Every now and again, when I start the car, I get the brake warning lights and several beeps. After a moment or two it disappears and all is well. As it's intermittent, mentioning it to the dealer will probably get me nowhere. However, if it occurs more frequently I will. UBM
I'll tell you all again¬! Are we sitting confortably? Apart from a brake fault, this red brake warning light is also an early warning your battery power is getting low. The brake system is the first thing on the circuit from the battery (apprantly). When there is low juice, the brake warning can come on. Now, don't ask again!
Sparky
UBM. Are you saying that it could all be down to a battery running low?
UBM
No poo sherlock! How many times have I seen it and how many batteries later!

J_C
Thanks UBM - I have to say I didn't know of this, but you are correct. Not so long ago I had the brake warning appear twice - a few weeks apart - so when the car went in to have the aux rads done I asked the techs to check it out. They confirmed that the fluid level was ever so slightly low (and topped it up for me), and also that the battery was on its way out so they replaced it under warranty. I had no idea that this had triggered the brake warning.
TyreA4C
I'm sitting comfortably but with a new new battery. I think that I mentioned this in the first post. I guess the volts can be low on this as well but unless its faulty (which of course it could be) then it should not feature in my problem. Unless... what else will drop the volts sufficient to cause the brake lights (alternator?) but without draining the battery completely after leaving for a few days. In my case what do you think is the cause of the flashing handbrake symbol?
paul_tdi
I had the exact same issue on mine a while ago. The first battery Audi sold me was the wrong one which did not help matters either! Probably worth checking that they have put the new battery in. As there are no faults being logged it would suggest the battery setup is incorrect. Good luck! UBM
I had it once - a top up fixed it for a few days. I had the brakes checked - nothing wrong either. In every case, it has been the damned battery.
Sponge
Before replacing the battery did they question you on the type of journeys you did? We mostly do frequent, short journeys, so the battery is bound to take a beating. I just wondered if they would use it as an excuse to get out of replacing it. UBM
No - they never asked! And no, I typically drive 40-50 miles a day in 2 trips.
TyreA4C
Update from first posting. Well the car has been in the Audi Garage for a few days and they have now replaced the dashboard lights and the fluid sensor and the problem still remains. UBM - yes I know you think it’s the battery! Now Audi (after three wire rerouting, one new battery and a new set of dash lights and a fluid sensor) have told the Garage that it’s a known and acknowledged fault on the B6/B7 (2001-2007) A4's and they are looking into a fix. This is apparently going to involve some form of "relay" to avoid the circuitry that causes the problem on start-up from cold. So the problem is still logged with Audi and I await the call for the mod – if Audi ever get to understand or sort it. Still I look on the bright side: its been cleaned five times FOC!! kite
Nice to see Audi acknowlege a fault. You let a dealer wash your car
