macdond
Has anybody had an audi towbar fitted to a S4 54 plate cabriolet. What does it look like? Do you end up with an ugly tow ball or can you remove it while not in use? Is it like the swan neck type that comes from under the car. Also has anybody bought the audi bike rack which fits on the tow bar? Do you think it is worth the money?
SamD
Apparently the S4 should not be used for towing
CabGirl
As Sam says... it's not an option on the S4!
pablos4
[ QUOTE ] Apparently the S4 should not be used for towing [/ QUOTE ] Shouldn't be used for towing what exactly?? How about a small trailer full of garden waste to the local tip?? Just because a towbar is fitted doesn't mean you are going enter the local tractor pull. Is there any official blurb from Audi that states "thou shalt not fit a towbar to an S4"?
SamD
Check your owners manual. There is some blurb in there about the car not being used for towing full stop.
pablos4
Interesting! The only bit in the owner's manual regarding towing i've found so far reads: Towing a trailer : If your car has a factory-fitted towing bracket, the rear sensors of the parking aid blah blah blah.... CabGirl
If you go to our local tip you're odds on to get a puncture.
Scotty
It's not offered as an option and Audi maintain it shouldn't be. It can be done but I don't know how insurers react to cars being adapted when against the manufacturers advice.
rottenbend
I thought it was also something to do with type approval. Is the permitted towing weight on the VIN plate? If you exceed the permitted towing weight, I'm sure the insurers will be less than happy.
spikeyboy
This has been discussed on here before - and someone has had a tow bar fitted. The reason that towing is not recommended is due to cooling the V8 lump - but when i had my aux rads done the tech told me Audi had fitted the Aux rads for extra cooling especially when towing - so go figure
Scotty
"the tech told me".....must be true then
macdond
I actually want to start using a towbar mounted cycle carrier. It's odd that you mention that Audi recommend you don't tow anything when they actually sell the towbar to fit the car What are the thoughts about towing a small speed boat/jet ski's? I bought it 3 weeks ago. Previous owner had had a detachable tow bar fitted (they shouldn't have)... fortunately the ball looked like it had only been used once. I got the towbar removed last weekend. Was a fairly major job (about 3.5 hours by an Audi technician). Meant removing all interior boot trim, BOSE, bumper, lights etc. I can't beleive someone had a towbar fitted to a performance car like this in the first place. The towbar looked poo stuck in the middle of 4 exhausts! Before... After... MUCH BETTER!!
zerologic
i guess not all tow bars will be used for towing... some (like mine) just to carry a cycle rack. As it happens my licence doesn't even allow me to tow anything anyway!!
Quattrophenia
Probably no harm fitting an A4 towbar to an A4. Just not recommended for an S4.

Quattrophenia
The S4 does share the same options with the A4. Could be worth checking with Audi UK. They may approve for the A4 but not the S4.
Daz
Here are the fitting instructions for an B6 A4 Cabrio. Westfalia are the suppliers of the OEM Audi towbars. Fully detatchable but you may need to make a small cutout in the bumper on an S4 which you may or may not see. This is what someone did to get the A4 one to fit an RS4. harddrive
Does anyone remember that episode of Topgear where they tried to tow a caravan with an evo and they blew the engine on it because of the drag from the caravan. Ok so they were doing 95mph+ with it attached... Maybe this is why the don't fit them to the S4's
Daz
[ QUOTE ] Maybe this is why the don't fit them to the S4's [/ QUOTE ] Quite possibly. If they had an approved towbar then it would mean that they would have to make sure the car was capable of towing anything. Whereas just a bike carrier would be fine and not detrimental to the car at all.
