Mk V GTi real MPG help?

So I might be looking at a GTi as a possible company car option with a new job - the tax side isn't too bad as the base price starts reasonably low, so it's actually about the same co. car tax cost as the normal choice 520d that I could also have. But what I really want to know is what real world mpg do they do. This will be quite a big factor for me as private fuel is not paid and I'll have an 80 odd mile round-trip to the office most days. The VW website suggests that upwards of 35mpg is possible - so what do people on here see on long motorway type runs with lots of sixth gear use?

I would have thought 35 should be possible with a decent motorway run. I get around 30 but I rarely drive for more than 15 mins on A roads to and from work. Longer spells have to help........go get the GTI, it will be much nicer than a 520D!!!

If you drive the Mk5 GTI 'properly' - Meaning using optimum gears to keep you in the appropriate gear for both stopping and accelerating, and I don't mean 'boy-racer' style - I doubt if you'll see more than 28 mpg. I've only ever seen more than 30 a few times in 31,000 miles including every kind of journey you can care to describe. That's my experience anyway.

60 mph in 6th for mile after mile is the only way you'll achieve 30-35 mpg imo. Not so much fun!

29 mpg average here also (measured by fill ups, not computer) - a mix of commuting (stop / start queues) and motorways and fast A roads.

I've noticed the mpg is very sensitive to speed when motorway driving - with 33+ mpg achievable only at a constant 60-65mph. Anything higher and mpg drops frown.gif

Thanks guys. The majority of driving will be constant speed motorway work, probably up to 40K a year, so I'd expect to get the higher end figures! The BIK Tax on a GTI is actually about the same as a 520d M Sport due to the difference in P11D values, so the main advantage with the diesel is better mpg. That said I'd rather buck the trend and get a nice GTI than a bottom end 520 or A6 2.0 TDI - would make the change from the S4 a bit easier to bear!

True, although the S4 will do high twenties on the motorway if kept at 70-75 in 6th gear - I've even seen 30mpg a couple of times. The GTI comparison is more between it and the diesels - which will do 45mpg at least, but if the BIK contribution is the same then I'm very tempted to upset the company car trend and park a GTI next to the rows of 5's and A6's!!

I've got a 25 mile drive to work, about 20 of that on the M27. In the morning with sitting in traffic for half the journey I tend to get 27 or 28 mpg. On the way home when there's usually free flowing traffic doing 70 - 80 I tend to get up to 34-35 mpg if I don't do anything stupid.

There is however a very nice stretch of clear dual carriage way (A27 past IBM North Harbour) which it is irresistable to blast down ECLIPSe.gif for about a mile which knocks it down to 32 - 33 mpg on the overall journey home.

It's the short journeys that you get terrible mpg's on I've found. My overall average according to the trip computer is 28mpg.

A quick hijack of this thread...

Try coming off at junction 11 of the M27 and turning left (north) and going over the back of the hill through Boar Hunt, past Southwick and then up onto the hill to the Churchillian the road is very fun... wink.gif

That's pretty good. I do a lot of business miles and get a rubbish mileage rate (15p per mile) so i'm really trying to push my average up to 30. Best achieved by driving sensibly for most of the long journeys and then having a little fun where appropriate. 169144-ok.gif

You could always claim the extra 25p (to make up the normal 40p) on your tax return!

When I was running her in I got around 35-36mpg sometimes a little higher on a long run. Now I only manage about 31-32mpg but recently they've been short journeys of only 12 miles ish. It's nice to know that you can drive it hard and still get reasonable mpg yet if you drive normally you can get excellent mpg. 169144-ok.gif

on short journeys i get 28-30mpg but 35-38 is easy when driven +20 miles on generally high speed roads. I went for a fun 130 mile drive through wales a couple of weeks ago and with plenty of fun driving i came in with 37.8 mpg which stunned me grin.gif
