You could always claim the extra 25p (to make up the normal 40p) on your tax return!

[/ QUOTE ]

not strictly true !! You can claim tax relief on the 25p(40p minus your allowance) at your normal rate of tax - i.e. if you are a 40% taxpayer then 0.4 * 25p, or a 25% tax payer ).25*25p. This is only for the first 10,000 business miles though. Thereafter the rate drops to 25p per mile less your allowance, so in your case that would be 10p X 0.4 or 10p x 0.25 respectively.

by the way I average 28-32, but like has been said you have to drive like a saint on the motorway 60-65mph to get higher than 30-31mpg.

A quick hijack of this thread...

Try coming off at junction 11 of the M27 and turning left (north) and going over the back of the hill through Boar Hunt, past Southwick and then up onto the hill to the Churchillian the road is very fun... wink.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

I can vouch that this road is, indeed, a lot of fun - and at the weekend you shouldn't have the kamikaze white van brigade! During the week at rush hours it's a bit scary having vans rounding blind corners coming towards you on the wrong side of the road smashfreakB.gif

On the subject of MPG, in my experience it depends very much on driving style. Maybe it would be worth comparing what you get with your current car versus that car's "official" MPG claim and then applying that % pro rata to the GTI's official 35MPG claim. Then you can see how your journey types and driving style might affect things. Just a thought.... might not work!

Of the two i drive regular the average to date is

28mpg for the DSG 3door.

32mpg for the manual 5door.

We often do alot of stop start on company visits through the day. So most trips are only around the 10-20 mile each way distance.

That's quite a big difference between DSG and manual shocked.gif

I drove 140 miles down the M1 this morning with the cruise set at 75mph (on the GPS) most of the way. When I parked up in the centre of watford (otherwise known as The Harlequin Centre) the 'puta said 35.3mpg. Not sure exactly how accurate that is but shouldn't be too optimistic.

Thanks guys. The majority of driving will be constant speed motorway work, probably up to 40K a year, so I'd expect to get the higher end figures! The BIK Tax on a GTI is actually about the same as a 520d M Sport due to the difference in P11D values, so the main advantage with the diesel is better mpg. That said I'd rather buck the trend and get a nice GTI than a bottom end 520 or A6 2.0 TDI - would make the change from the S4 a bit easier to bear!

[/ QUOTE ]

Yep, exactly what I did. Carpark here is full of diesel saloons, and my GTI laugh.gif

BIK on the GTI only a little more than the GT Tdi 170 I also looked at.

I went from passat diesel co car with elise for the weekends, to GTI co car as my only vehicle. Overall costs have come down, GTI not as much fun as the lotus but I get to enjoy it every day, and no risks of expensive repair bills, or servicing, or tyres etc..

I know, i think the manual one is a good example and the dsg average.

I Don't trust the cars mpg computers there never right, ours are always worked out from tankfulls and after the last talk on here about mpg we went through past reciepts from new to workout the total average.

Of cause if the speedo is way out its more or less certain the miles traveled will be too. yelrotflmao.gif

I wouldn't say it's particularly expensive but it's dependent how you drive it and what sort of journeys you do. It's what should be expected from a 2 litre turbocharged car which has lots of features and so is relatively heavy compared with cars of the past.

Out of interest, does anyone know how the weight of a Mk5 GTI compares with a Mk4 GTI ?

I went a wee drive at the weekend, just taking it easy, average speed was about 58mph for the journey. According to computer mpg was 39. Seems a bit optimistic. What do you think? Just out of curiosity do you guys with remapped gti's see an improvement in MPG during normal driving. When I got my P1 remapped from 280bhp upto 320ish my mpg improved. Which was a nice bonus.

The theory behind remaps is that they generally improve the running of the car as the original map is designed to protect the engine in poor conditions and with lower quality fuels which other countries may have. Once remaped they use fuel more efficiently and as a result have more power which in turn means the car doesnt need to be worked so hard to extract the power.

I'm presuming the tfsi engine makes very efficient use of fuel in standard map, one because its recommended to run on a quality fuel (98) and secondly because of the fuel stratisfied injection (fsi) which in theory fires the exact amount of fuel needed into the cylinder and doesnt waste anything?!

Add to that low emissions (for 200bhp) and great fuel consumption and i still cannot believe what an amazing engine it is.

I've noticed with re-maps that the insurers tend to put them in brackets of how much power improvement they give, if it's below 20% the increase in the premiums is minimal (about £20 I think) with the Revo you've got Robin it's more like a 25% increase isn't it.

I wonder if you could get a very slightly tuned down remap which would keep you within the 20% limit and improve the fuel efficiency of the car at the same time?!

Thinking about fun vs doing lots of business miles (and hence quite high insurance). Would also make it easier to sell a remap to the wife if I could get slightly more MPG!! 169144-ok.gif

My insurers haven't upped my premium. They've also ran out of space on the policy piece of paper to list all my mods! grin.gif

I'm not fussed by the mpg - It's better than my BMW so it seems good!

I'll have to give you a ride on Saturday at the meet if you would like. 169144-ok.gif
