thenamesross
Hi folks I keep getting the brake pad warning light on the dash along with the big red (!) Brake pads are fine btw and its a 2000 A4 2.5 TDi. Checked the codes and got this, 18259 - Powertrain Data Bus: Missing Message from ABS Controller P1851 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent Apart from checking the connections on the ABS controller is there anything else I can check (booked on for an mot tomorrow and Im guessing it will fail with this?) Cheers Dave
4RingsDH
Hi, i assume that is the fault recorded in the engine ecu. What fault does the ABS ecu record? if any. The fault you have read relates to a comunication breakdown between engine ecu and abs ecu. You can check channel number 125 thru measured value blocks on the abs system and see if the abs is communicating with the engine ecu (Engine 1 will appear if communication is ok) The brake pad warning light may be on because of a faulty connection at one of the pad sensor connectors. Is the abs light on? its not unusual for the abs ecu to fail, when this happens you cannot communicate with the abs via diagnostic equipment (vag-com). thenamesross
Think you might be on to something there. I cant get the vagcom to communicate with the ABS module and your correct, the fault code I got is from the engine module. Is it an easy fix if it is the ABS ecu? (doesnt sound cheap). Wil check out the pad sensors too. I think this may be a separate issue to the ABS thing as the pad warning light has been on for a while before the the big exclamation mark ABS thing (I love jargon)
UweRoss
The ABS controllers in that vintage of A4 are infamous for failing and fail in a manner where they no longer communicate. But before you replace it, check all the ABS related fuses. -Uwe-
thenamesross
So does that mean the whole controller would need replacing if the ecu is goosed? Gave the connectors a good wiggle this morning before the test and the light didnt come on all the way there. Thought I had cracked it. Then the tester started the car and the warning light came on again. So it failed - doh! I suspect there may be a dodgy connection but wouldnt know where to start. 4RingsDH
More likely to be the ECU im afraid, they can just fire up and then fail again. As above i would check the fuses, check for any corrosion on the abs multiplug (usually green deposits on terminals)if thats all ok its gonna be the ECU. ECU comes seperately now and is a bolt off bolt on job. Have done a couple fairly recently the cost was £380 approx plus vat for the part. (Audi Supplied). If in any doubt, get the car to a local independant for confirmation. Best of luck
Gaunty
Give ECU-Testing a ring, I've just sent mine off to them with the same errors and they returned it within two days fixed for £100. JCT600 wanted to replace the entire ABS Pump module at ten times as much. http://www.ecu-testing.com/audi_abs_pump_module.html
thenamesross
Thanks for that. Have the car booked in to the garage on monday but I suspect your right. If it is goosed, £100 sounds good to me. Can do without a £500 bill right now!
4RingsDH
Yeah thats a good link. I will endeavour to use them in the future. Nice one Gaunty
thenamesross
Damn, damn and thrice damn! Its the pump itself thats knackered apparently. Only £1400 knicker for a new one so looks like I need to find a 2nd hand one. Nae happy
UweRoss
The pump is a mechanical thing. It won't cause "missing messages". At one time, the pump and control module were only sold as a single unit, but I believe you can now get the control module separately. -Uwe-

thenamesross
So you reckon it wont be the pump? I'll need to ask why exactly they think its the pump and not the ecu. Dont want to replace something thats not broken but at the same time Ive got no car till it gets fixed as the mot is out, doh!
