[Audi A3/S3] Engine Noise

My 2.0 TFSI was looked at by the stealers yesterday for squeaking/swishing noise the engine is making upon cold start up. The noise increases in repetition with revs while the car is in neutral and while its in gear. Once the engine has warmed up the noise disappears.

The stealers say the noise is coming from the cam belt (I assume by cam belt they mean cam chain as I believe the 2.0 TFSI's cam is chain driven). They could not be more specific about what was causing the noise other than saying it might be the tensioners. They have asked me to book my car in again so they can order parts and spend some time trying to fix the problem.

So my question is has anyone experienced this kind of noise before? If so what was it and what needed to be done to fix it?

Thanks.

Awfully difficult to describe a noise accurately. The 2.0T FSI engine in the GTI is well known for making unexpected sounds when ticking over both before and after a run - Almost diesel like!

I assume it's not a brand new car and that the noise has developed recently. Is it especially loud? Air Intake connections worked loose anywhere? - though that would effect performance. So it's revs related suggesting engine related.

Someone who knows more than me will doubtless be along soon.

Thanks for the reply RR. I got the car last September and it has now covered 18500 miles, it was run in by the book. The noise has been present for a couple of months. I left the car in an airport car park for for a week a couple of weeks ago and it sounded utterly terrible when I started it up on my return, this is what prompted me to take it to the stealers.

I'll try to get a sound clip posted shortly.

I'm pretty sure mine doesnt do it although i will pop the bonnet and have a listen once the rain stops. What i would say to the dealer is, start a couple of other cars with the same engine and if they dont do it tell them you want the noise taken care of as it is obviously not normal!

That is a strange noise. I'd say it isn't the camchain as that would be a metallic sound.

That is a squeaky sound from one of the rubber belts driven by the engine at the front imo.

Can you tell if its from right/left side of engine bay?

maybe one of the pulleys just needs some WD40.

but then it would be there all the time and not disappear when engine is warmed up.

Interesting, In the Video, I counted around 34 squeaks in a 10 second period, which equates to 202 squeaks per Min (SqPM). Assuming the tickover is at roughly 800 RPM this means that whatever is making the noise does so at a cycle of once every 4 complete revolutions of the engine. This rules out the engine internals themselves as they cycle once every one rev! The only thing that I can think of that has such a long cycle length is the cambelt itself.

Sounds like one part of the belt is particularly smooth, dry and well fitting into the pulleywheel notches and the noise is caused by the teeth of the belt pulling out or sitting into the pulleywheel when cold.

I see it's under warranty so it's up to the dealers to sort which they'll probably do with some carefully applied approved de squeak solution! Personally, I'd insist they replace the Cambelt and possibly any toothed pulleywheels as a precautionary measure.

Many thanks for the replies so far!

I’m more confident now that the sound is coming from one of the belts due to your replies. When I take it in to the dealers I will be insistent they fix it with replacement parts as lord only knows what sort of damage could be done to the engine if a belt snaps!

Does anybody know for definite if the 2.0 TFSI cam shaft is chain or belt driven? I’ve tried looking the info up but could not find anything .

When standing in front of the car it sounds like the noise is coming from the left hand side of the engine bay. This is where I tried to point my phone in the video clip.

Re my post of a while ago, It's a 4 stroke engine so the camshafts will be turning at a quarter of the speed of the engine. It could therefore more seriously be a cam follower or camshaft bearing. Where you suggest the noise is coming from though still suggests the belt, I'd try and get a little water onto the cambelt inner surface somehow to see if the noise temporarily goes away.
