[Audi A3/S3] Super unleaded fuel

The car is mapped for 98RON, it will run on 95RON fine but the ecu will retard the ignition to do this. You loose power and mpg goes down. There isnt really a saving by running lower octane fuel due to the MPG decrease so all you gain is driving about in a lower powered car.

I'm talking specifically about the 2.0TFSi mate, it's made for 98RON 169144-ok.gif

Are any of them direct injection? The old S3 certainly wasn't.

V-Power should specifically be used so the 2.0TFSi can run in Stratified mode, it's not all about the RON. The 1.8T engine didn't have a preference (although a higher RON is obvoiusly usually going to be better) but with any FSi (or direct injection) it's important to use V-Power.

Yes the 1.8T did, my old LCR had a 98 ron sticker on the fuel filler, it also said in the manual if you ran 95 you'd get less power. The FSi engine suffers less from detonation though due to the accuracy of the direct injection but you will get more power from 98.

Unfortunately my fuel card is for Maxol, and I only know of 1 Maxol garage anywhere near me with superunleaded, and it's a 20 minute drive away. mad.gif

If your from the states then 93Roz=95ron and 95Roz=98Ron(Roz being the US octane rating and Ron being the UK one).

Yes it will be 'fine' but a) you lose power and b) you will probably experience lower mpg.

Wherever possible, I ran my S3, M3, wife's 2.0T A3 and my 911 on V-Power / Optimax. On the rare occasions that I couldn't get 97 / 98 RON, the car was definitely less responsive and fuel economy was 5% worse.

Why not fill it up with Diesel and be done with it!!

It's designed to run on Super-unleaded so that's what it should be given!!

Anything less is a waste!

I think he's american mate and getting confused with Ron and Roz. 95Roz in the states is the same as 98Ron over here.(I'm assuming that from his "Loc" and the fact he talks about a Maxol fule card which i've never heard of).

I live in Northern Ireland, I think Maxol is a NI petrol station company, not sure if they're on the mainland.

Sidicks - we don't get V-Max/Optimax or any fancy Shell fuels here in NI, unbelievably the highest octane fuel we get in NI is at Sainsburys which is 99RON. confused.gif

I think if you are forced to put standard RON95 in you S3 you should opt for Shell or BP. I have a Focus ST at the moment and putting in standard BP compared to supermarket unleaded I definetly get more miles per tank, about 5 to 10%Its hard to tell if there is better performance. BP Ultimate in the ST definetly gives more miles and better performance. I think the Focus is recommended for RON98 but it says min 95 on the filler cap.

I have a S3 on order, should get it in 5 weeks cool.gif. Nearest shell to me is 20 miles away so my car will get either tesco, sainsburys or BP super unleaded unless I for some reason am close to a Shell when needing fuel.

Sainsbury's super is 97 RON.

As I said I run mine on it and it's absolutely fine and plenty fast.

Tbh I haven't noticed an appreciable difference between this and V-Power. Going 20 miles to get fuel will very quickly become annoying when running the S3!!

Damn right it will be, never done it yet so I have no idea what V-Power is like. Plus V-Power is 6p more. Just checked and the Shell garage is 14 miles away. So its either sainsburys or 28 mile round trip + and extra 6p per litre. Hmm easy choice. I rather use those 28 miles having some fun rather than going off to get petrol!

I ran my 2.0 TFSi on V Power for around 2,000 miles over a month. I check my mpg brim-to-brim, and there was no difference to the other 28,000 miles on normal unleaded. No noticable performance difference either, although it was difficult to ever stretch it for more than a few seconds anyway.

I just worked out that based on a 6p a litre difference in price and 15,000 miles a year @ 25mpg, you'll be spending an extra £160 on super unleaded over normal.

C'mon guys, if you've just spent the best part of £30k on a car I am sure you can stretch to put the proper fuel in it 169144-ok.gif

I used to notice a fairly big difference between Normal and Optimax on mine it felt a lot more peppy when it got a shot. But with V-power I think the difference is far less don't know why but I often just put normal in if it was a long motorway fun that I was just going to stick it on cruise.

I found the big difference to MPG was the weather, it was far more economical when it was hot than cold, as it should mind but it was notably higher in summer than winter. 169144-ok.gif
