Roof jamming

Ok, My S4 Cabriolet is at the stealers for a number of reasons, one being the roof jamming while opening and shutting. I called the dealer today to ask what progress they are making with the roof and they have told me they have done a basic reset. They claim they have not been able to get it to jam again.

Now it not that I don't trust what they are saying I just think there is more to it than that.

What are your views?????

Only happened to me once - and that was when I turned the engine off as the boot deck was about to latch. That’s a know issue - and is mentioned in the manual. If you’re not guilty - then it must be faulty. I think the diag system will tell them which sensor stopped the close/ open process... Switching off the engine should leave the accessories powered - and it does .. but for some reason it causes problems at certain points in the roof cycle. I have heard the opening / closing on steep hills can cause probs too

theres an issue on steep hills too - audi are aware of this but its not documented. basically roof mech gets confused.

when you say jamming what happened exactly? never had a roof fail to open close apart from on a steep hill, going to fast (accelerating from lights with roof closing) and switching off ignition whilst its closing - doh! couple of friends have done the same too - double doh!! grin.gif

This happened to me today - was playing with the opening-while-moving thing while chatting to a colleague, and stalled - as we were pulling away from an off-site meeting in a hotel, in front of a long queue of colleagues in their own cars.

It may be simplest just to resign by post and move to Switzerland, compared to the barracking I'm going to get tomorrow ... blush.gif

ANyway, it jammed halfway, and I

drove home with it folded manually and the rear deck not fully closed. Got the roof closed now and latched manually BUT the rear deck is still jammed an inch open.

Is this going to be a problem in trying to get it all reset? I've tried not to force anything but there's been a lot of up and downing manually and nothing has been in sync with anything else and nothing has clicked closed as it should.

The manual is in the boot, which won't open ... smashfreakB.gif

I've had a similar situation my Cab, a 2005 3.0L Sport model.Persistent problem with pax door window doing a little dance and then dropping and the roof either refusing to close/open with a "soft-top cannot be used" DIS message, or stopping half way though the operation.

Roof had never worked properly since new and was at the dealers more times than I care to remember - so I refused to take it back until they sorted it. They did a lot of work but now the roof is perfect. Faults found were:-

a) Alternator output was found to be low leading to a low battery voltage.

b) The centre console roof switch had an intermittent fault

c) There was something to do with adjusting some sensor in the roof storage box and the "comfort module" was replaced.

Hope you get it sorted soon. I usually found the roof would fail to close just as the heavens opened. sportifs2.gif I know it works now but I STILL don't have the confidence to use the roof when people are watching (or at the traffic lights!!)

It is really worth reading the handbook if you ever have time to work out how to manually close the roof. Its really quite easy and may save you having to call Audi assist or breakdown guys. I had the same problem when turning the ignition off, but a simple 5 minute demonstration by my mate who works at Chelmsford Audi showed me how to reset the roof. You can do the roof manually with one person too just about!

My problem now is that I've closed and locked the roof manually, but the rear metal/plastic deck won't fully close. The dealer tells me that it should just drop and lock, i.e. that the only fiddly bit ought to be the front latch with the red handle.

I assume what's happened is that the locks on rear cover have engaged (as if it's closed) while it's open.

you need to manually lift the big metal boot panel up, pull the roof down, then do the ignition on/off thing.

The nice audi assist woman will give you the exact steps over the phone! 169144-ok.gif

This is to reset? What when it's like now, when the big metal panel won't latch shut (whether roof is folded or closed) ?

You might have already tried this:

Have you used the key to lower the deck?

i.e. Key socket which is located behind the rear seat arm rest.

Just had a quick look, and can't find what this refers to... what arm rest? confused.gif

Thanks for info anyway, all laugh.gif. Got Audi Assist coming at 7 tonight after work, but if I can fix it now, I can drive rather than train it into town for my afternoon meeting 169144-ok.gif

In the middle of the rear seats there is a panel which pulls out, not an arm rest which I suggested smashfreakB.gif. You will find a hole in the top of the gap which the key fits. You then twist this to lower the rear deck panel which should then allow you to shut the roof fully using the key at the front of the roof.

Ah, the ski hatch thing. I did look in there but couldn't see anything. The details above are very helpful though, will look again on way out and fix if I can, or take the Tube.

It means I've forced down and locked the front before closing the rear panel, I hope that hasn't spanged up the mechanism somehow. UHOH7.GIF

Good tip, macdond 169144-ok.gif. Manageed to get it closed.

However, the sensor seems trashed - sft top not secured alarm still going off at 20ph upward, and boot won't unlock.

Also, Audi Assistance, or at least their call centre, have fecked up and don't know their own technicians' working hours - see this thread

Hi guys, my roof jammed a few months ago and thats when I learnt about the key. I closed the roof got home and tried open and closing it with/without the key then it just worked.

But Monday night this week, I had the roof down, on a flat road - parked up with handbreak on and then I tried to close the roof. It got all the way until it should lock and then stopped and I had to use the key again.

I now cant get the roof open, unless I use the key and do it manually!

This time it is different as the rear passenger little window doesnt go all the way down if I use the open all windows button and I think this fight have something to do with it.
