[Audi A3/S3] Interesting conversation with the dealer. Rubbish?

As I've already mentioned I picked up my A3 S-Line from the dealers today after having it in for a couple of warranty issues. One of them was what I consider to be noisy suspension, low speed noise when you're maneuvering over an uneven surface.

Now it's been in for this before. I went out with one of their 'master techs' (good bloke, can't fault him) and even though these things are notoriously difficult to track down we/he decided it was coming from the rear and when I went back to pick it up they had changed the rear shockers under warranty, no questions asked.

Fast forward and the noise is still there hence the visit this week. This time after extensive road testing they reckon the noise is definitely coming from the front shockers but when I went to pick it up they hadn't changed them but instead had forwarded a 'DISS' report to Audi. I asked why they had done this and not replaced them and the service guy said that as there were no updated parts available there was no point. But the purpose of the DISS report is to make Audi aware of the problem and if there are thirty other reports from other dealers then Audi do something about it. This didn't really ring quite true. I asked why when they thought it was the rear they replaced them no problem but now the know it's the fronts all they've done is sent off a report. He didn't really have an answer, he got a bit tongue tied and just kept repeating himself.

So I got home and decided to ring Audi. Unfortunately tech services had gone home but the woman I spoke to agreed that did sound a little odd as a DISS report is more to do with a second opinion and she'd also never heard of this 'thirty reports or more' thing.. They're phoning me back tomorrow.

Sorry for the ramble but I wanted to share and obviously there are people on here with more experience than me re: dealers and Audi UK. I wondered if they wished to comment.

Rear Shock absorber noises were a common problem on some of the earlier A3's, hence the reason they replaced them with no questions asked. Your car wouldn't have needed them replaced though to be honest as its far too new.

I'm suprised they didn't replace the front shocks though if they were so sure they were at fault as its in there powers to do so. A DISS report is when a Customer reports a problem that a dealer struggles to rectify and a way for Audi Technical to monitor faults/issues with vehicles. Say if 30 Dealers have customers reporting suspension noises then Audi will ultimately work on a fix for it, if they don't already have one.

Update.

No phone call from Audi CS so I rang them. Surprise, surprise they have no record of my conversation with them yesterday so I went through it all again. Once more the rep agreed that PG Audi were talking rubbish. We'll see what happens next.

Unfortunately what started off as mild irritation over noisy suspension is now becoming a bit of a crusade. I don't like being spoken to like I'm an idiot, I don't like being lied to and I especially don't like piss poor customer service.

I had squeaking/groaning from the front suspension of my 2007 S-line and they changed a part on the front suspension - I think it was a bush or something. This only showed it's self under slow speed/reasonable lock. Has gone away. If that sounds like your issue I can PM you my reg and get them to look up what was done...

a DISS report is not only for logging faults, it a direct link to audi technical department where the dealer can have quick email contact with technical. very good way of solving problems, and also technical can kind of say yes replace or no not replace certain components in your case. they also have direct information from audi relating to common faults so can advise centers of warranty procedures. so a DISS report is quite fair.

where is the noise coming from? is it from pull away? and also if you take off throttle and put back on?

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem at all with them notifying Audi and/or taking advice. What I don't like is that they are sure the noise is coming from the front shocks but then don't do anything about it. Especially when last time it went in and they thought it was from the rear they changed parts straight away. I also don't like them telling me all that 'thirty reports' thing which I believe is just nonsense.

Anyway, the noise. As I've already said, these things are notoriously hard to track down. I think it sounds like the rear but the tech and my mum (!) think it's coming from the front. You really only notice it at low speeds and over uneven surfaces, not necessarily when turning either. At speed you don't notice it due to engine and road noise. It sounds like a 'tock tock' noise as the suspension travels. Basically it's not a noise I expect from an Audi. Don't forget, the tech says he's heard it too.

ive come accross a very simular thing before... and it was quite funny when i realsied what it was. it may be different for you, but its one to look out for. on the rear parcel shelf you have the pull strings which lift the shelf when the tailgate is opened. on the bottom of the sring pulls are rubber balls??? see where im going with this... at low speeds, and pulling away, off and on the throttle, bumps, braking, these balls swing back and forth and lighly tap the inner boot trim which is plastic. listen carefully.. is there 2 taps together? pull the rear seats down and watch these balls move and touch the trims... tap tap.. tap tap..

Update #2

No phone call by Tuesday so I rang them back. I was shocked (not) to find that I had to repeat the whole story again but was promised that they would be in touch with PG Audi and ring me back. So, still no phone call by today so I've called again. Can you guess? Yes, I had to repeat the whole thing yet again. It's like Groundhog Day at Audi CS. Now the latest CS rep seems to be a little more switched on and has promised me a call. Well you never know...

Related... I had to nip over to JBS on some other business yesterday and while I was over there I got Kev to take my car for a run. He heard the noise, reckoned it was coming from the front but as it didn't happen on really rough ground, more on just an uneven surface his thoughts were that it could be the front anti-roll bar. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? Has anyone else had issues with front anti-roll bars on their 8P? Nelson? R8ROB?

I know i'm well out of date with this thread but my a3 s-line went to the dealers about 3 times for the same reason. The master-tech did lots of investigations on it and concluded that it was something in the front shock absorbers causing the problem. Again, he said that there's not much that they can do about it really. He raised the issue with audi uk i think.

The prob is still there but i've kinda got used to it. it only ever happens when i'm driving over the road humps near where i live so its not the end of the world.

Car is currently in for another problem though - smokes like a goodun in traffic jams - its a 2 litre tdi. Again, they're stumped cos it's hard to replicate the issue. as a result i've been looking closer at 2 litre tdi's and i've noticed that they all seem to smoke more than other soot-chuckers. maybe a prob with new 2 litre engine. Definately going for a beemer next time sekret.gif

Front antiroll bar on 8P? never... completly different to the old A3 that had all the problems. its a tough one without listening to it.

Well the whole episode has taken quite a surreal turn.

Even though I left every contact number I could think of with Audi CS they left a message on my home phone last Thursday to say that a Mr xxxx would contact me from Peter Gilder Audi. Skip forward to today and no call so I rang him. He wasn't aware that he was supposed to contact me but informed me that Audi where not classing the noise as a fault and as no revised parts (ie shock absorbers) are available then I have to live with it. Even though both PG Audi and Audi UK admit that the noise is there. Oh and they reckon it's the rears again. An 'operational' noise was I think how they put it. Sounded a bit like 'they all do that'.

So I seem to be stuck in some sort of bizarre limbo. Everyone agrees it's noisy but it doesn't seem that anything is going to get done. PG Audi are now raising the issue as a complaint but what that will do I have no idea.

And one other thing, assuming everyone on here that drives an A3 doesn't have the same problem. If PG Audi have changed the rear shockers and the noise is still there but they are still insisting its the rears that are the problem surely that should point to something else at fault?

Not sure if this is relevant but my car was given a 'front ARB bushes have play' advisory at it's MOT, as it was still (just) under warranty I took it to the Audi dealer who advised me that the 'play' was normal (they all do that sir!) however they did replace the rear shock absorbers.......

Still no news from Peter Gilder or Audi UK.

I've let a local garage have a drive around and give the car a once over and they seem to think rear shock absorbers too. But they did mention that it could be the mounts. Lost me at that point but does anyone know if they are a separate part or if they come complete with the shock absorber?

Rattle/knock noise from rear shocks s wel documented. On mine I could recreate it statonary by gently bouncing the rear

I'm struggling to find info and from what Nelson was saying earlier this only seemed to affect the early 8Ps???
