I got my Pioneer yesterday, it is good, but I think I upset a few owners on the avforums as there is clearly more detail in the Panasonic PHD8 that I have currently.

Going to give it a few hundred hours to bed in before I decide though.

How are youre new Pioneer 428 doing

1/ how does standard definition tv look ?

2/ standard DVDs

3/ HD material on tv and from HD dvd if you have any also does the picture justify the extra price compared to the previous model 427 thanks

do the picture settings make any difference? do you have many things connected vai scart sockets etc also can you recommend the palce to get one ive seen them on the John Lewis website fot £1800 but not in store today the assistant said they are due in shortly though!

The overall image is very good, and yes the picture settings make the TV, out the box it is shockingly bad imho.

This is what I am using for BluRay....

Contrast 34

Brightness +1

Color -4

Tint 0

Sharpness -10

Colour Temp. Low-Mid

R 0

Y +6

G -4

C 0

B 0

M +2

Enhancer Mode: 2

Gamma 3

Colour Space: 2

I-P Mode 1

Everything not listed is off.

And this is what I am using for Sky, output 1080i on SD and HD over HDMI...

contrast 30

Brightness 0

Colour -6

tint 0

Sharpness +10

Everything Off

Enhance mode 2

Gamma 3

Colur Temp Mid-Low

Cyan -6

Blue +6

magenta +9

Colour Space 2

I-P Mode 1

Drive 2

The jury is out at the moment whether I like it more than my PHD8, couple of problems are, the gamma is to high so low level detail in the blacks is crushed, giving the screen lots of pop, but not that accurate.

The screen is also a little softer than the commercial Panasonics, so fine detail is lost, you need to see both next to each other to notice this, but I can tell and it is a bit annoying knowing stuff is missing, but this is getting better as the screen beds in.

Is it better than the 7th gen Pioneers?? Oh yeah!! 1000x better.

I bought the Panny PX70

Managed to get: This Package + pedestal stand for £999

All from JL. 5yr free guarantee on TV, 2yr on the DVD recorder.

That was back when the DVD recorder was free, and I also got a price match of £99 quid back.

Havent really used it yet, past messing about. But it was chosen after months of reading up on AV forums and help/advice from gIzzE

Panasonic DVD recorder (Free - JL retail at £250),

could you PM me the price-match code please?

Waylander,

I never have had one. I think AV forums is a little misleading on that point. 169144-ok.gif

I just called Customer Services of my local JL branch.

  • 2 weeks later...

well I went to JL today and compared the Panny and the Samsung.

Both had superb SD quality [on a par i'd say] but I did find the "blackness" issue you were talking about gIzzE.

Too dark on the Samsung but when Dymanic mode was turned off the colours were not as warm as on the Panny.

The Rep told me not to even both playing and just buy the Panny. Have to admit had I just seen it on it's own I'd have been happy with the Samsug. Side by side the Panny wins but I have to source a decent price for it now!

Empire direct £930 with free ped, stand and DVD player.

All indie Panasonic shops have free 5 year warranties at the moment and should match most web buyers.

Watch for so called web bargains that add in delivery (£30-£60) and warranty (£170-£250 for 5 years)

Cheapest I've seen it was £730, but that site added £60 del and £200 the warranty.

I'd opt for doing a JL price match or the indie route, which with the warranty offer is the same as JL, but more local!
