oneforsorrow
I have accupuncture and find it to be very effective. I also have a Physio at hand to make sure I keep mobile when things get problematic. Good luck and I hope you find some relief for the pain - I know how miserable neck pain is. Dave
I had neck pain for months and kept popping the ibuprofen to no avail. Then i went and saw a chiropractor who traced the problem to a lower back issue. Basically I had a bad rugby injury when i was about 14 which weakened my lower back.. this affected the way i held my head (as in compensation) and caused the pain. Anyway, to cut to the chase, I had about 6 weeks worth of treatment and it disappeared completely. I now go back for check up's twice a year. walter_the_great
the pain came from a car accident(last year!), somebody drove into the back of me, its kind of been there since the accident but over the past few months its been getting a lot worse, have had about 8 sessions with the chiropractor. The chiropractor said my back is now straight but the muscle pain is now at the bottom of my neck(in-ine with my shoulders) and also the top of my neck under the hair on my head. Oneforsorrow: did the acupuncture cure the pain or just give temporary relief? also whats the difference between a chiropractor and a physio? is there any doctors that are specialists for on muscles? Mook
The difference between a Chiro and a Physio is pain - tends to be lots with a Chiro and only some with a Physio. I went to a Chiro once and swore I would never do it again. I injured my shoulder earlier in the year and went to a Physio for six sessions and that fixed it. Because of the injury, my shoulder muscles had started to tense themselves, to compensate for the pain. The Physio worked on the ones that were damaged and hey presto, six weeks later it was fixed. After a car smash a few years ago, I had massive problems with my lower back and posture. It wasn't until I went to a Shiatsu specialist that it was all sorted - it's a bit like massage, but not as high a pressure. A lot of people think of Shiatsu as another one ofthose hippy treatments, because it's to do with meridian lines and how energy flows though you. I don't care, though, because it worked for me. oneforsorrow
[ QUOTE ] Oneforsorrow: did the acupuncture cure the pain or just give temporary relief? also whats the difference between a chiropractor and a physio? is there any doctors that are specialists for on muscles? [/ QUOTE ] Accupuncture hasn't cured the pain but makes it more manageable. Taking painkillers long term wasn't working for me so I thought I'd try acupuncture. I was sceptical and really didn't think it would be any use so I was quite surprised when I felt a noticable benefit after the second visit. It can make me feel a bit dizzy and spaced out after treatment so driving home, certainly for me, is a no no. I've not tried a Chiropractor so can't comment on the difference between them and Physio's.
Waylander
I'd do with physio myself. Sounds like muscle issues so not sure what joint manipulation would do. Physios could also treat you with ultrasound therapy etc. I arranged acupuncture for my dad whjo has severe neck arthritis. It worked and also had the post-treatment light-headedness oneforsorrow describes.
skifly
over the years I have been to see quite a few chiropractors, phsios, osteopaths and orthapeadic surgeons including some of the best in the country. Therefore I feel i am in a pretty good position to comment. My experience from severe trauma was when i injured my neck waterskiing. It was so severe the physio that was with us taped me up from the middle of my back, all the way out to my shoulder blades and all around my neck, otherwise I couldnt even hold my own head up!! Personally now for injuries such as the one I had, I would always go to someone really good and who can do multiple treatments. Many Physios can do a bit of manipulation (chiropractic type stuff) and likewise many chiropractors can do physio type work. Personally I have never felt i get much benefit from a chiro session where you get one assessment, then come back for a 10 minute adjustment every couple of days as this does nothing to help muscle damage. I will now always get some physio work, plus chiro if necessary done at the same time. In my book there is no point putting the joints back in place if the muscle is fecked and simply puts pressure on the joint to pull it back out of place. I have also had bad chiropractors before where they did something that was not right and left me in a lot of pain. One of which was the person I currently see. I called to say I was having problems. He was round within 30 mins and sorted the problem and the pain went within a couple of minutes. Personally I feel that accupuncture did nothing for me. My dad however swears by it as he has posture issues due to parkinsons. I also feel that ultrasound is only really good for certain things and I have seen people before who simply believe its a one-hit cure-all and usually dont do much other work to help. So after all my ramblings - get yourself to someone decent who can do both chiropractic plus the various forms of physio work. Where are you based and maybe we can give you some tips on where to go?
