ESP=ABS+ASR+EBD+EDL? - Discuss!

I was talking to a guy the other day about all the 3 letter acronyms associated with the ESP button and I couldn't be sure what systems remain active when you turn ESP off. I had a quick search on here expecting that someone would have posted something about it but to my surprise it doesn't seem to have been discussed anywhere. Apologies if it is and I just missed it!

As far as I can work out, ESP is the collective term for the 4 main driver aids, namely ABS, EBD, EDL and ASR. ABS is the Anti-lock Braking System, EBD is Electronic Brake-force Distribution, EDL is Electronic Differential Lock and ASR is the Acceleration Slip Regulation (aka TCS). What started the whole conversation off was that apparently the Audi RS8 has a 2-stage ESP button that turns off different bits of the 4 systems and I was wondering if any stay active on the R32 when the button's pressed. Anyone know?

It certainly doesn't switch off the ABS. In fact on my S3 it only really seemed to affect the traction control.

So my guess is the ASR is disabled, and the "try to stop you skidding into the ditch" software is taken out of the loop as well.

Hmm I just did a bit more digging and ESP (or Electronic Stabilisation Program) isn't a collective term for the others at all but a fifth system in its own right. That leads me to agree with you Froggy, the ESP button probably turns off ESP and ASR but leaves the ABS, EBD and EDL active. I would also assume that stage 1 of the RS8 button does the same and stage 2 turns the other three off as well but that's only a guess smile.gif

I wonder if there's any way to turn all 5 off in the R32? Would be interesting to see how much of a difference it would make - although I'm not volunteering to find out!

ESP is never totally disabled when you switch it "off" - it's made more tolerant. ABS is never disabled. ASR is made more tolerant and the EBD works based on what the ASR tells it what to do (i.e. it brakes specific wheels dependent on the slip).

If you to turn "off" ESP and send car in to the slide, it will come back on regardless, if it senses 'too much".

I did try this on my ex-AUDI A4 Quttro.

Basically, by terning ESP off it allows you to have more aggressive driving untill it will come on trying to correct.

So, as Mook mention, it simply makes it more tolerant.

It will come back on if the ABS has to intervene. So don't brake and you're fine grin.gif

i once owned a very early s3 (1999 t plate)that didnt have esp, you could get all sorts of angles in the wet driving it!! even better when i had it modified oettinger.the esp in the mk4 r32 that replaced it was just too intrusive
