DNay
Just got my hands on an audi MMI navigaton unit to go in my 2006 A6 (4f). It's been supplied with a magnetic mount GPS Antenna, made by Star Navigation, Model no str-3. I was going to mount this where Audi mount their GPS antenna, inside the roof headlining by the rear screen. Will I get good enough reception by having it inside the roof skin? Also, the small amount of instructions that came with the antenna, suggest it needs to be installed top side "sky view" I am assuming this means it must be installed one way around only. if this is the case, the mag mount wont have anything metallic to latch onto. I was wondering given the light weight of the item if I could achieve the correct orientation simply by sticking it to the inside of the roof panel with double sided tape. Has anyone any experience with these antennas or should I spring for a genuine Audi item. I dont want to install the roof mounted sharkfin, as I believe this involves drilling the roof, and I'm not prepared to do that. Any advice would be welcome. The signal from the GPS satellites is so weak that it MUST have minimal obstructions between the antenna and the open sky - even metallised windscreens block the signal. If you don't want to drill the hole for a roof mounted antenna then you'll have to fit the antenna on the dashboard so it has a reasonably clear sky view through the windscreen. craigyb
In the A6 saloon you can install the NAV antenna in the rear glass, remove the rear section of the head liner and you will see a black section at the top of the rear screen. On that setcion you wil lsee a location for a GPS antenna. On the Avant it has to be a roof mount sharks fin.

I think I read somewhere that the official Audi GPS antennas in my model car are glued in and that taking it out would destroy the antenna. As I haven't got one there anyway, I just need to know that the double sided tape idea will not prevent the antenna from picking up the signals. Craig do you have the necessary equipment to configure this for me once have the hardware plumbed in? If so Id really appreciate it if you could give me a price, as your not too far away from my neck of the woods, and Im sure more experienced in this field than many techs in Audi dealerships. craigyb
I have a B2 with double sided tape holding to the window behind that rear roof liner. It's a 30 second job to recode the car for NAV system, but it may be worth updating the MMI on your car at the same time to the latest, eitehr 3460 or 4220 if it arrives soon.
