Hi I bought an R8 for 10k over list, its coming early November and I starting to get a bit concerned. Should I try and sell it and get back what I paid or just keep it and see how the depreciation goes?

This is the spec

AUDI R8 – Manual

Ice Silver Metallic

Carbon Sigma Side blades

Stainless Steel Pedals

Audi Magnetic Ride

Sat Nav System Plus

Bang & Olufsen Sound

6 CD Auto-changer

GSM Bluetooth Phone Prep.

Heated Seats

Electric Seats

Acoustic Parking System

Well Gareth is the local expert on this and will be able to give you some more informed advice, however...........

I think you are in a difficult position and think will end up losing a heap of money, whenever you sell.

I had a deposit on an R8 which would have been a 2007 car - I cancelled, as I was concerned about the high list price (relative to the established competition from Porsche, which I currently own) and likely residuals.

Lease costs are significantly higher than for the Porsche, which does imply that after the brief 'honeymoon' period for launch, residuals may be dissapointing.

In my opinion, paying £10k+ over list for one of the first cars - July delivery - would have been 'brave'. Paying that much over lunch for car that won't appear until towards the end of the year is likely to be an expensive mistake, in my opinion.

I hope I'm wrong.

Always nice to see cars in demand but that means that the premium market (which to my mind is selling something into the trade) in R8's will probably be gone by November/December.

Interestingly, one dealer was telling me that their first customer car was not due until October/November.

[/ QUOTE ]

The premium market is actually more about the dealerships putting the cars in question into retail customers who want the latest car and won't/can't wait for it. The premiums for selling into the trade bear little to what the dealer will pay.

For example we were asked to place a brand new 997 Turbo 3 weeks after the UK launch date for the owner who didn't want/like it. Tom Hartley jnr was offering £3-£4k over list and then selling/advertising for £15-£20k over list...

Suffice to say we were able to better that for our client by quite some margin grin.gif

They have got three r8s at the Audi dealership in stockport, 2 black one in grey. It looked like the grey one was sold yesterday though whilst I was in. No prices on them not suprisingly, I am asssuming one was the demonstrator.

I am going to pick up my car today, wil ask how much they are going for, great looking car sounds awesome, personally I think its much more desirable than a 997 and certainly much more rare.....

Its down to how many of these things they make. I have heard stories of the waiting lists running into years already....

Would love one have to wait and see what the availability and resale is like though 12 months down the line.

In my opinion if you are paying so much over retail price you are always going to loose big money unless you really know what you are doing...

We I asked when I went in to get my car from its service. Waiting list for the r8 at their dealership is feb 2009.

They said main dealers are not allowed to sell for over retail incidentally.

If the waiting list is a year an a half surely the residuals are going to be rock solid for the foreseable future.

They are only making 15 of them a day currently.....

4 theri today, 2 x black, 1 x grey and 1 ipod white (very nice).....

The waiting lists for cars like these invert very quickly when they go. Once the 'in crowd' change to the next new thing then the waiting list reverts to people who genuinely want the car and will keep it two years plus.

In Feb 09 the waiting list will be the same as a 911 IMHO (under six months I believe) but the question is how long before that does it gets to that time.

FWIW demand is being fuelled at the moment by the fact that a number of dealers have still not had any customer cars come through.

PS M3 waits are theoretically two years but they will be six months max by this time next year.

In Saturday's Telegraph, Tom Hartley says that R8's are selling for £12k over. Now I presume that that is retail so if that's the case then its £5-7k over in the trade. Not much really for an £85-90k car.

PS I was in Glasgow Audi the other day (sales staff still as useless as ever) and they had an R8 in black with the carbon blades - very nice combo.

Not many cars command over-list prices at the mo though. So for audi, thats a result! Great car, very highly sought after etc. Cant say that about 997s, aston v8s or many others

It is a massive result for Audi. Especially when you consider how much their top end models have bombed in value in the past.

Definately not going to happen with the r8, not for the foreseable future anyway. Audi seem to have learned that quality + desireability + limited supply = rock solid residuals.

Something that Porche worked out long ago....

Saw one flying down park avenue in south manchester on Friday. Awesome cars...

True also. Its interesting to see that the hype on the size of premiums is not really the case though.

[/ QUOTE ]

As ever the truth is far removed from the fiction...the most premium actually paid that I personally know of is £7k. That was paid by the new owner to the first owner who flipped after a week.

Within the trade they were paying £3-7k over list before any cars were available but now everyone has one the prices are far less.

If you really have been offered a secure bid of £15k over list you would (IMHO) be totally mad not to take it!!!

Also there is little chance your dealer is going sit on your R8 from October '07 to March '08.

yes I have been offered 15 over for it! I am paying 10 oevr for it, I suppose its what some one is willing to pay for the car/spec; like I said dnt give a poo just want it now.

and why would the dealer want to sit on till 08 ????

its going to be a 57 plate and I intend to sell it when the 08 plate comes out (FYI)

Very very lucky, i've been offered 2 brand spankers at bang on list. One low spec & one high spec.

Anyone who now thinks they'll make a big profit is either gonna be very lucky or trying to live a dream. very small premium perhaps for the perfect example if someone is very keen but £10K/15K over list is bordering on dreaming.

Any big gains would have been on the very 1st batch where £5K-£10K was possible for the perfect spec, that has gone now.
