I am currently looking at a A4 avant S line with the 3.0TDI engine although i am undecided whether to hold out for the new one next year (still waiting on photos) or look for a decent second hand example, I am however decided on the 3.0TDI powerplant. As the subjct says has anyone any experience of remaping or chipping this engine if so what are the results and the pros and cons. do you still get decent mpg etc. Thanks in advance Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
cosmicblue Posted September 1, 2007 Report Share Posted September 1, 2007 Remapping the 3.0TDI was something I looked at when I first got mine in November06 - after the superb Revo remap of my 2.0TDI A3 it felt like the way to go. Now 15,000 miles later I've drawn the conclusion that the 3.0TDI with 230bhp and 450nm of torque is plenty quick enough. Make no mistake here, in the real world all that torque ensures that even a 2 tonne lump of a cabrio is indecently quick. Genuine fuel economy (not the fibbing DIS) works out at 34-35mpg on a Tiptronic no matter how you drive it. You should be aware that all that torque shreds sets of 4 tyres really quickly.... Although, I am trying Michelin Pilot Sports this time, so may get a few more miles out of them!!!! I had my car "chipped" back in January, and am very pleased with it. I get just over 40mpg (again thats a true calculated figure, and not what DIS says - which is 47mpg) The most noticeable thing for me is the increase in torque - on crusie control, it no longer hunts for gears (it's the tiptronic box). It's so torquey now, it just pulls like buggery in sixth (even when overtaking and going up hills) Figures from the rolling road are as follows: before 229 BHP @ 3875 RPM 315 lb/ft @ 3784 RPM after 280 BHP @ 3882 RPM 405 lb/ft @ 2735 RPM I paid £500 and got it done at AmD (one of the last before they went AWOL) All told, I would now go to APS, as most of the AmD skill is there now!!! Sounds like it's well worth doing the remap on the 3.0L TDI. Does anyone know what numbers to expect from the slightly earlier 203ps 3.0L TDI engine? [/ QUOTE ] What tyres have you got cosmic? I'm on kumhos... plenty of tread left after 22K miles on them! Fronts wearing slightly quicker than the rears (as expected). [/ QUOTE ] Back when I wrote that post I had my Avus silver cab and replaced Continental Sports with Dunlop Sport Maxx - the Continentals felt awful from the day I picked the car (new set of tyres as part of the deal) to the day they were replaced by the Sportmaxx. The current Cab that I've had since 30th of Sept 07 is on Mich Pilots - has 11k on the clock now and I reckon I'll see 15k out of these. One noticeable thing about the Mich Pilots is the consistent grip - wet or dry and a very 'planted' feel on the road. I guess they will be scarily expensive when they come up for replacement - I got the set of 4 Sportmaxx for less than £500 last September...bet I can't get the Mich's for that..... I think the 3.0TDI is a heavier engine block than the B5 RS4 also, plus cabs have steel reinforced windscreen which probably doesn't help front tyre wear either! In old ft/lbs that is around the 320-330 mark (ish)....mental maths was never my strong point... !!! The poor tyres of a 3.0TDI have to deal with all that torque from relatively low revs (1420 to 3250rpm) - i.e almost all of the time. 80mph in a 3.0TDI Tip is just 2000rpm... An RS4 is much, much more powerful with closing double the bhp (crikey I got so close to buying one last year instead of another 3.0 TDI) but the 3.0TDI can deliver a wicked thump in the back from a standing start none-the-less. [/ QUOTE ] MRC tuning sees to the 450lbs/ft - pretty common on a remapped RS4 TBH. I agree that the lower down torque from the tdi probably increases tyre wear.
