R32 - 3000 miles on

Well 3k miles covered now - car is nearly 2 months old.

Love driving the car, around Milton keynes in the evenings it is great, flying around, grip is excellent on the corners and fast chicanes offered by MK roundabouts, power delivery is good and improving with each mile. Seats and position for driving is excellent on these short hops.

The bulk of my driving has been fairly long round trips - MK - London _ essex Meet - MK and so on, quite a few haev been 300 or 400 miles with maybe 200 or so in one sitting. Many of these are covered with an engine speed of around 2k revs.

Now let me take a second to paint a scenario for you - you are about to go out with the other half, she has a new dress on and you mention it makes her look a bit chubby and you can see her cellulite - imagine how you ears would ache after a 200 mile trip with her - thats how I am finding the R32 - 2hr40min trip from Gatwich via Oxford yesterday and my ears were ringing by the time I got home, the drone at an average cruise is soooooo monotonous, that coupled with the fact that after 2hrs I find my legs ache in the seats because the base is the wrong length for me and I just cant get the back position/lumbar support 'just right'.

So after my first 3k miles I would deffo recommend the car to anyone, but it can tire you, the beetle cabrio is actually a more pleasant car to do a journey in, its just when you open the R32 up it does make you forget about the weaker items and when the exhaust takes on the note it should have it does sound fantastic - just a shame VW thought you needed the constant resonance at lower speeds.

Interesting write-up Chris.

I pretty much found the same things as you after only a 240 mile drive home from the stealers.

Most of my (our) driving is around town in shortish trips, though, so I don't find the exhaust note or leg uncomfiness a problem. It is a damn nice car though grin.gif and those are only minor niggles.

Zes I have eactly the same complaint. If you've got the autocruise on and/or you're not reving it up, so long as you're around the 4,000 you find the right pitch outside of the boominess. I went round the south of France for a 1800 kms week long trip with her indoors and the dog and did survive, however any journey in excess of 200Miles in one go I would ay is tiresome in the R32, and my particular compalaint is the seat, and getting leg cramp because the front pad puts too much preassure on the rear leg - possible case for deep view thromboses. Here again, when you're on cruise control you can bring your feet up to rest them on the floor and remove the weight of your rear leg. As for the noice I think the Miltek exhaust conversion from AMD could be worth consdering, as it keeps that sweet high end noise but removes the boom - I've spoken to an engineer there and there are a couple of guys who've had their R32s tricked out iwth the Miltek.

Try cleaning with a basic BBQ cleaning spray! It cleans the inside centres perfectly and although I'm not a chemist the fact that BBQ cleaner is for removing burnt meat fat, juices and smoke, sort of 'ditto' the material that stains the inside exhust area. Besides Auto-sol is a cleaning polish with abresive qualities, so the BBQ cleaner should be kinder to the finish!
